My weird Fuel pump setup

Why is there a pump sitting right there (fuel filter too, i think) this is surely a setup made by the previous owner(s) right? My pump is supposed to be in the engine bay, right?
I don't like it sitting up there in the way like that. any ideas or suggestions?, would there be a problem with moving it down into the spare tire well or maybe even back up in the engine bay?

Leaving these items where they are is best

The electric fuel pump belongs in the trunk, though it is typically mounted to the forward wall of the gas tank well, rather than on top of the shelf as yours is. It's not a bad idea to put a filter upstream of the fuel pump as you show in your picture (protects the fuel pump). Another good place for the filter is in line directly before the carburetor. The spare tire goes where all the rest of the stuff is in your trunk, and the well is typically covered with a wood shelf, then a rubber pad or carpet.

The plate that you show on the side of the engine is for mounting a mechanical fuel pump, and the Mechanical pump needs to be there because it works by mechanically pumping a lever arm as it rides on a cam lobe on the auxilliary shaft inside the engine. Plugging the hole is correct, when using an electrical fuel pump, which is my preference. Others prefer the mechanical pump. There are good reasons pro and con for both.

The other device with the hoses is part of the crankcase ventilation system. It is a centrifugal trap that separates oil from the vapors, and the vapors should be connected to the air cleaner for recirculation back into the combustion of the engine. If you plug it up, you are looking for a world of trouble.

Danno, I suggest you buy a couple of different workshop manuals for the Fiat spider for good reading and reference, and go to some of the Fiat gatherings in your area, for a good opportunity to see other peoples Fiat spiders for comparison. The Fiat spider was designed very well, and keeping with the original design is a good choice for most items. Your inclination seems to be wanting to change everything, which is certainly your free choice to do so, but reinventing everything may not be the best approach. There are many before you that have made worthwhile changes and improvements. It is easier, in my opinion, to see what others have done previously, before charting off in a new direction.

Another good source of information can be found by searching the archives for keywords related to what you are working on. This web site, unfortunately, does not have access to its immense volume of archives from the past several years, but I understand that the web owner is intending to have that info available at some time (in the near future, we hope!!). Other good web sites for searching for informations are Mirafiori.com, FiatCenter.com, and Turbo124.com.

Please understand, I'm not trying to advise you against sharing your progress on this web site. On the contrary, we enjoy watching and participating in your project!! Just giving you a few other sources for information, that's all.

good luck!!

thanks for the advice! I'll leave the pump alone then. Anyway. I have the huge service manual and a manual for my new carb, but I have to admit that I sometimes can't follow the diagrams and need an actual photo (which the manual has at times, but mine is obviously photocopied as I can't make out hardly anything photowise).

Looks like a "facet" fuel pump that bayless sells. Mine is on the forward part of the tyre well.. under the battery and mounted on a pair of rubber isolated studs.

That sounds like a WAYYYYY better place for it. I think I'll be moving mine there soon.

Keep in mind that the best height for an electric fuel pump is the middle of the fuel tank height. Try and keep it leveled at that height. Apart for that, the trunk is great place, and the filter good idea.

filter/pump location

Is the filter before the pump or after the pump. I thought electric pumps push better than suck and the filter should be after the pump. I can't tell from the photos how yours is set up.

mine is before the pump, and as discussed before that's not great. there is a perfect filter sock down in the tank. I'm replacing all the hoses soo and putting that down on that shelf (whis is about halfway up the tank.
