THAT i agree with Danno. the el Camino will garnish nostalgia purchases for what is left of the original owners of the first el caminos. awfully short sighted, i think. GM just seems to be picking up the rear on this segment of the market...too little too late. PT cruiser and the redesigned Mustang made it just fine. Doubt that the Charger will get much reward, and the HHR was butt ugly (of course, GM). if GM really wanted in this market segment, they should never have let go the Camero or Trans Am.
Mark, I was referring to any reference linking Subaru with the invention of any pickup, not the specifically the Courier. And sufficient research will reveal that Ford was the first to mass produce the pickup. A truck, based on an already existing CAR design was first produced by FORD first.

You are correct that the first compact pickup was a Datsun, 1959-60... though I am willing to bet lunch that a side to side comparison with the Ford Model T based pickup would play heck in mustering much relative size over the Datsun. And...hmmm, what is Courier but a Mazda; no arguement there.
