Cap for Center Console

Post by contrevi »

Does anyone have pictures of what the cap that sits over the original center console looks like (Tan color)? I have an 83 Spider and was wondering whether I should try one of these caps that sell for 100+. My other option is to remove the center console and give it a fresh coat of interior paint or buy a replacement console at $400+. The console is in good shape but could use a touch up. Is removing it a big pain, I imagine not.
Also does anyone know where I can get the tan color interior paint that would match my 83 Spider?
Thanks,

Trust me on this one - use vinyl paint on your existing console if it is in good shape. The caps are nowhere nearly as nice as the original. You'll have to check around a bit (call a few upholstery shops that are local to you) to find someone who can match the original color. You'll need to take in sample of the color to get a good match. If your headrests look good in color you can use them. I've used the SEM vinyl paint on my interior and am EXTREMELY happy with the result.

Option 3 is to get it covered in vinyl or leather with french seams. This was something you get the cars with from the factory - and they used horribly cheap materials that shrunk after a year. All of the LE cars had this (and a brown dash with a leather strip on the bottom). You can find better materials and they will last! World Upholstery will sell the matching vinyl in sheets. On your car I think just the center console was done since the radio console was that integrated spidereuropa rectangle.

Thanks Spidernut I had a feeling not to buy one of those caps. I figure some paint to make it look nice again will work, my console is in good shape just faded a bit.
Thanks,

I repaired some dings and cuts in this console and sprayed it with vinyl paint. Compare it to the one beneath it which is the console cap. This is the same car in both pictures.

Any tips on how you repaired the cuts in the center console. Mine is in decent shape expect for a couple of rips.

This will be hard to believe, but it worked fantastically and is holding up really, really well! I used paintable siliconized "painter's caulk" from Home Depot. I filled in the cuts, holes and tears with the caulk and leveled it. Once it was mildly skinned over (using a hair dryer to get the surface to skin over), I used a piece of vinyl texture paper from a vinyl repair kit and pressed it gently into the skinned over caulk and removed it. It took several times to get it right and took some mild sanding, but it came out really nice after a few tries. It isn't perfect, but you have to look very closely to find the repairs. It worked much better than the vinyl repair kit I bought (which was useless by the way).

It is flexible, paintable and can be sanded if it doesn't come out right. I was very amazed with the end result. I fixed very small areas and a few rather large holes. All of them are holding up nicely.
