Scratching rear window

Post by surfingfreeman »

I recently bought a quality vinyl top as my old one was falling apart, particularly irritating was the thin band of scratches about 3/4 of the way down the window, I remember when I bought the car 3-years ago the PO would put a towel into the folds as the top was put down, I think this was to prevent the upper vinyl lip from vibrating and scratchin the window plastic. The drawback is that you can't do this without getting out of the car to place the towel in as the top is put down. So my question is has anyone "McGivered" a quick fix so that you can throw down the top on a whim at say a redlight or otherwise? I know this sounds cheesy but perhaps gluing a strip of soft material to that upper seem where the vinyl meets the plastic window so that when it rubs on the lower portion of window it doesn't scratch it?????? Thanks

Some tops do, some don't. I've had some really well made tops that never do this and some really well made tops that always rub. The towel thing works but the towel itself needs to be made of good material or it will scuff the window as well.
