Bumpers

That post about being bumperless in MN has really got me on a mission to get rid of my front tubes. So, I have been thinking about it and realized that it has to be really easy to just mount a slightly curved, chrome "C" bar out front. Does anyone have the tools to custom bend and fit one to the front of the car. Really, it can't be that hard. Then, you could just bolt it up to the front bumper shocks. Or, fit some T bars out front. That has got to be a snap to make for someone who has metal working abilities and tools. If I know how to weld I'm pretty sure I could make some of those.

Anyway - thoughts

what exactly is a "c" bar? can you draw me a picture or give me an example?

I don't know. I'm thinking of a curved peice of metal that is chrome and can be bent. Just look at old bumpers. I guess is was thinking that if you looked at it from the side, it would kinda look like a "C" Don't know what I'm talking about but I have seen bumpers like this before.

making a custom curved bumper out of pipe is doable but takes a lot of work to make it not look like just that. need to look for a pipe shop with a hydraulic bender. if it is not a mandrel type the pipe will flatten on the tight corners. then you need to decide what you are going to do with the ends. flatten and weld, use plastic tube plugs, etc. now comes the hard part....finishing. prepping pipe for chrome is an arduous process getting the pipe flat and smooth. lots and lots of metal sanding.

how would u fasten them, meaning would u make it the same size as the original shock holes and fasten them as the bumpers where? i never looked ever to see how they are anyways,i have read there a bolt hole that can be used to fasten the t bars> am i right

If you google "T Bar Bumper" you come up with a lot of VW applications but they also have bumper fastners. All kinds of them. Nothing looks too difficult to make. But, I was originally thinking of just using the original bumper shock and just bolting up something less intrusive or massive to the front end.

I think Manolamatt is really on to something.

i'm attempting to mount a set of bumperettes from my brothers 1978 triumph spitfire. i'm going to leave the front bumper shocks in place and try shaving the rubber down on the bumperettes to match the spider body. i will let you know how i make out. i hope they don't end up falling off. you know how British parts are!
