Question on bumper-less front lamps.

Post by dantye »

I am considering a Winter project to take off the '81 "boat anchor" bumpers. I have found what appear to be the basis for good working bumperettes using a fabricated bracket with modified existing bumper mounts at:
http://www.awdirect.com/rubber-bumber-g ... /hardware/

To do this, I would prefer to mount the turn signal lamps in the lower outer rectangular holes, which the current turn signal lamps and lenses will not fit without considerable fabrication. Does anyone know a source for reasonably priced lamps that will fit in or over these rectangular areas (possibly surface mount)? (The lens color would not matter as I could use amber bulbs.) Those from Fiat suppliers for earlier models that would appear to fit are about $250 each.

Alternatively, has anyone had luck modifying the existing '81 type lamp assembly to fit this area?

Thanks!

Several vendors and a member sell kits.
I used motorcycle rear orange lights and fabricated an extension so they would fill in the hole.

There are a couple of people on here that sell turn signals that fill in that hole. One is Mark Allison. I decided to just mount mine behind the grill. Then I put stainless grills over the signal wiring holes. Then I actually used a 4" stainless hose to get fresh air to the air filter from the passenger side hole.

I got mine from grittracing (Tony). They weren't expensive, work well, and I like the look.

your choice of lights really depends on whether you want something that looks like it was designed for the car or was just tacked on

Bumperless look with turn signals that I think look period correct, complete with chrome frames - never understood the 'modern upgrade' look for bumperless turn signals.
