Title search? Mine had a 2000 title at 67,000 miles, and when I bought it last Fall there were 69,000. PO bought for wife who only drove it a couple hundred per year. I didn't research any further back, but I am assuming it is therefore 69,000 and not 169 or 269,000, also based upon overall excellent condition and presence of a lot of original parts.

Carfax doesn't go back that far. You might have to check with your state Department of Motor Vehicles, or Dept. of Public Safety, or whomever is over vehicle licensing. You'll probably have to pay to get the info.

Other than that, there's no way to tell if the odometer rolled over or not.

Why worry about the mileage? It is what it is. It's not going to run or look any better with 38K, 138K or 238K. It's OLD that's for sure! How do you even know if the odometer is even right? I have one that reads 16K sitting on my shelf at home. They are pretty cheap and really, really easy to swap out.

I have a 1998 Civic that I only drive (daily) from Nov - April because I had a Hayabusa that I drove in season. The car is now 14 yrs old and only has 130,000 km Theorectically could this not apply to our Fiats as well? I realize there are a lot more variables however, I think it may be a good baseline. My 1980 Fiat has approx 97000 km just babbling

just thought of something, sometimes on work orders the garages will indicate the km's/miles perhaps if you have any paperwork from previous owners this may help  good luck with your "friend"

My odometer says 4000 miles. It's a young puppy.
