De-Goopify-ing.
De-Goopify-ing.
Although my spare motor runs quite well, it does have some problems with goop. That being that the PO used so much stop leak in the radiator that the head is literally clogged up with that stuff. Does anyone know what to do to or how to get the head free of that stuff?

A machine shop should be able to hot tank it. I had a old shelby head that was totally stopped up with that crap came back looking new. It was cheep too!

Do I have to have it totally disassembled for that? I mean this motor really purred allong quite well. If I do, then I guess I will have to do that because it will not cool the way it is.

Passages in head and black pretty big, and most "goop" is pretty soft, if it twas mine I would just use water and compressed air, or take it to a car wash and give the insides a good hosing.
Heck, if you are really feeling anal pull the soft plugs, the tstat housing, water pump, and then hose.

Since the freeze plugs (assuming that is what you mean by soft plugs) are leaking, that may be a great idea. I will do that. A magnetic pickup tool will probably get that out, or a section of clear tube taped to your vacuum cleaner and snaked in. Use a new vacuum cleaner bag and you will know when you get it out.

I tried both of those for days and days. The problem with the vaccuum is that you can not get down into the bevels of the piston. Their just isn't enough room. Trust me, I've tried (believe me when I tell you that you have to use ear protection when rigging up a straw type attachment to the shop vac - it is freaking loud And, NEVER, NEVER use one of those crinkle type of straws from a water bottle unless you want to loose your hearing perminently ). As for the magnet, those tips are magnesium or something. If you are having cooling system issues and you know the PO used stop leak, I'd first check the condition of the radatior. Like Keith said, the passages and coolant gallies in the head are rather large and unlikly to clog with stop leak. Unless you saw it in there, how would you know its clogged?
You could try Prestone super rad flush, which is basically a mild citric acid. The key is flushing out the citric acid with plenty of water as it will cause rust deposits when it reacts with the cast iron block.

May not help your situation, but the Garage Wisdom up here is:
Never put anything in a Radiator to stop a leak other than Ground Black Pepper. If it works, it may not work forever, but it will not create the kinds of problems kind of problems many of the commercial products create. Never tried it, but there are a lot of believers in this neck of the woods.

The motor is out of a parts car. It ran fine and did not have any problems with cooling but I have to admit, the radiator was a mess and did leak. The PO said that he just refreshed the motor with new rings but who knows. It never smoked or blew anything out of the pipe. Just purred allong with no problems. Had no problems starting either. Yet, it was a parts car so I pulled the motor and when I did, that is when I found all the black goop in the head. The motor has been sitting ever since. I used WD 40 to coat everything internal that was exposed throught the exhaust and intake. The delema I am having is that it ran fine. Now I'm gonna pull it apart and make it not work
