Forgot to ask about the middle of the dash piece. Are you planning on eliminating the plastic chrome trim and just make it a big square with cutouts for the lights and such? As far as a nice one piece dash, here's a pic of somebody's (don't know who) but I think it's absolutely beautiful!

For the door panels I used 1/4 inch panel board (same as original) for my son's spider, it will form easily and the vinyl will adhere to it nicely.
Nick
Nick, I'm making stained wood door panels, so the wood i used plywood. Someone somewhere mentioned trying to use panel board and then veneer it. I think it would hold up better if I can just get the whole piece in plywood, but I'm not ruling anything out yet.

(ahhh, I like this notification if someone posts while you are still writing your post.) Denise, you must have written that while I was responding to Nick. Sorry I missed your advice. My wife wouldn't be surprised to hear I didn't catch it. I'll look into 1/8inch, which might be a good thing to allow for some dynamat or equivalent partial backing for sound deadening.

Yes, I was thinking of just eliminating that little piece and making cutouts for the lights.

That dash is unbelievable! I don't think I can do something quite like that, but I might now consider a two piece with glovebox.

Danno!

My very first Spider, a '72 I owned in '86...the battery dies, and I had no money, so for several months, the terminals were taped up, no battery installed, and I got REALLY good at push starts! Even in reverse...believe it or not. Funny how you start to look at parking spaces differently, evaluating direction and degree of slope for an easier start!

My '69 Spider had a choke cable that was actually a hood release from a '93 Ford Taurus, complete w/ hood icon on it. I'm STILL ashamed of that...but it worked!

My currently owned '83 has a shockingly awful $6.00 generic radiator overflow tank. The original melted due to a missing exhaust heat shield, and the previous owner rigged this up. Ugh. I also removed the interior door handles / arm rests because when I took the panels apart for cleaning, those were...simply horrid. And had incorrect screws which ruined the plastic inserts in the door, making them tough to put back on. I now use the vent window to shut the door, much like you...

I once owned a former Postal Jeep that someone had cut the roof and doors off of. It looked a little like an old CJ-5, but no top or hardware would fit this butchered beastie...so it was open-cockpit driving, year 'round. At that time in my life, I lived in Portland, Oregon...home of the permanent rainy season. (I was young and poor, ok?) I kept a squeegee cliped to the dash so that I could use it as an INTERIOR winshield wiper...

By the way, that Jeep was a hell of a car to drive on a first date...
