ok i will take it off... there looks to be enough hose to reach after removing it and the short section of hose after it... how does one get at the pick up screen??So Cal Mark wrote:your car wasn't intended to have a filter before the pump. There should be a screen on the pickup tube in the tank for that purpose. Those electric pumps don't suck very well, but they make great pressure

Youi've done good. You know it dies cause it runs out of fuel. You know there is volt at the pump. So it is elementary dear Watson, it needs a pump. And Mark is right as he always is, it shoould not have a filter before pump. Does have a sock/screen in the tank.

When you get the gas tank uncovered in the trunk you'll see wires going to a plate that's bolted to the top of the tank. You need to unbolt it and pull the unit out. It's the pump and float. The pump will have the sock slipped onto the bottom of it. You should put a new sock in with the new pump, even if it looks good. It's a very fine mesh and could be ready for replacement and not show it. No use doing the job twice.
BTW, it doesn't just pull out, go slowly and when the float gets to the opening you'll need to tilt it to clear and again when you get to the sock.

Oops. I'm thinking of an in-tank system. I just got done with changing one out and blew this answer. No. You only have one pump, inline. The sock can still be gotten to the same way though. Pull the float mechanism. Sorry, I hope I didn't cause a panic attack.

make sure the hose is designated for FI and you oughta replace those clamps with banded clamps designed for FI. They won't bite into the hose like the clamps you have

i did check the fuel line for markings in case i needed to replace any..it says FI right on it.. i have enough slack that when taking out first filter it will reach no problem.. i will look for banded clampsSo Cal Mark wrote:make sure the hose is designated for FI and you oughta replace those clamps with banded clamps designed for FI. you might also replace the rubber mounts for the pump rather than using baling wire to retain it

On a FI car you will not be able to get to the sock that is on the pick up tube for the pump by removing the fuel sending unit. It is in a different part of the gas tank. You can not get to it period.

FI Spiders never had a tank pick-up sock
The FI Spider's tank design was modified with a non-removable pickup on the bottom of the tank, surrounded by baffles. That's why owners add a fuel filter in front of the FI pump after loosing the original Bosch pump to a supply blockage caused by 30 year old tank debris filling the pump's inlet. A better idea is to use an external strainer that will not immediately fill with more old tank debris. More info at this link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/rridge/set ... 922291519/

Re: engine gets hot... engine dies
sat is the next work on the car day.... pump will be here friday...
sludge in the tank makes sense..... why it works at first then gets clogged.... or not... it is puzzling to me that it seems to be such a predictable breakdown... but the fuel pressure gauge tells the story of a failing pump... i sure will feel better knowing that the tank is in decent shape and not causing problems
so i am going to give the car a good shake and drain some gas while replacing pump and new filter and see if i can see any particles...also gonna pull the sending unit and see what i can see... i can test it at the same time.. no low fuel light and readings when full are off according to the gauge
.i am assuming that the strainer lets gas flow more easily than a filter.... or what would be thee difference...... also it seems that if sludge is around the unreachable sock or screen then tank work would be needed... and the strainer would be an after thought .. do not want the pump to have to pull fuel to itself and pump. (thanks Mark and Majicwrench.. i am learning).... i will see if i can find anything like the picture your link pointed me towards
if gas is clear and inside looks good to my untrained eye i agree that the strainer would be better than the filter... also thought about spending a couple of extra bucks on the clear filter so i could see and the strainer would do that for me also..dont want to slow the flow though ..you know..joe...
also have a heat shield for the header coming in the mail...hope fully it will let me not be so preoccupied about the temp of the ignition system .... allready melted my overflow bottle... looking for options on that
my light at the end of the tunnel this month.... a car that will behave when i drive her more than 20 minutes.... got a 76 scout that is getting jealous of all the attention
