Does anyone install/reinstall the original "splash guard" on their spiders? It seems a little too flimsy to protest anything down there. Anyone?

I have read here some will put the thing back on. They might have picked up a small rock that got caught in the timing belt if the timing cover was deleted as well.
I took mine off and installed a oil pan guard, better investment in my mind.

I put mine back on after painting it and modifying it so that access to the oil filter was reasonable. Otherwise, I would have had to take off both the splash guard and front spoiler (they mount with the same fasteners) to get a good grip on the oil filter. Crazy.
Here is a pic of how I cut it, with a little left over fuel line, slit lengthwise, RTV'd onto the resulting sharp edges. Aircraft snips were able to cut the splash guard well.

I agree ... great job Pete. I wish I still had mine, but it was totally rusted and pretty much fell apart the first time it was removed to change the oil after I bought the car. I think (don't know for sure) it helps break the air flow through the engine compartment that tends to lift the hood. The edges of mine "flutter" at speed ... nothing dangerous there, just disconcerting. The center is held down by the latch and the edges look like a bird trying to take off!

I don't have the splash guard and my hood also flutters but only on the left side. Is it normal for the hood to flutter??

I havent seen mine since december of 1971. I understand it is supposed to improve airflow thru the radiator for better cooling. On a stock car without an airdam, to front rocker would create a high pressure area under the engine compartment and create a small high pressure area behind the radiator restricting air flow. this pan blocks the high pressure from the engine compartment. if you are running a front air dam, you have greatly reduced this high pressure area under the motor.

My hood still flutters, but with some fiddling with the hinge placement you can get it right. I had it pretty well set then had to remove the hood for the timing belt, seals change etc. and it got out of whack again. We have a protocol in cabinetry that says if you want the LL corner of a door to move IN, you move the UR corner OUT. This applies here too, as it is a 2 hinge system, pretty much like a door. When I have the time to do it (again) right, the start is to get the hinge placement correct from front to back, as measured by the alignment of the front chrome strip, then work on the up/down for each hinge side to force/get the corners seated properly near the windshield. New/correct rubber pads up at the windshield are necessary too to make it all line up. Takes a lot of patience and a helper to support the hood while you loosen, push/wedge/pry and retighten the 2 mounting bolts on each side.

my hood is sort of flat in the middle,it from 10 yrs of slaming it to get it to latch
when i had the car painted,i buoght a newer hood and the bracket was from the 78 hood.so it didnt fit corectly
my hood flaps abit on both sides
i read on here some one used a basket ball in the middle
and with help they gave it a slite curve all the way across
this will stop any flaping going on
