Shift Boot Removal

How do you get the shift boot cover off? I am changing from tan to black, but there is nothing in any of my manuals on how to get these out, or back in for that matter. Thanks!

Take off the shifter knob
Gently pry up the shifter surround plate( be very careful. It's easy to bend the metal plate that is the backing for the wood trim. I had to completely refurbish mine once I got it up. Need to be careful not damage the consol too.)
Slide the entire assembly up and off the shifter.
Carefully remove the aluminum ring that holds the boot on, you'll want to reuse it.
Place your new boot into the hole and carefully expand the ring to hold the boot in place. This is done from the underside.
Drop the whole assembly back in place and replace the shifter knob.
I didn't replace the plastic clips that holds the plate down. I wanted to be able to get it back up easily.
You probably should replace the inner boot at the same time if the rubber looks damaged.

Thanks. So there are two boots... hmmm.. I ordered only the outer cosmetic one, will have to see what is going on in there when I pull it apart.

Be VERY careful when you pry out that panel. Note the cracks and lost vinyl on the console above. Mine has similar cracks there. That covering on the console is very brittle after 30+ years and cracks very easily. The plastic clips on my console which the posts on the panel plugged into shattered with age and now I have some velcro dots holding the panel down. Makes it much easier to remove without damage. You can just grab it under the boot hole and lift it off without prying.

Thanks, I think I will just cut away the old boot so I can get at the ring and leverage the mounting plate from the boot side. My console has the same cracks, probably from prior console removals. The console needs to come out and be changed or refurbished and dyed anyway soon enough.

the inner boot is the important one. it keeps the tranny noise and smells out of the interior.

agreed, my wife and I were amazed at the difference. The smell, noise & heat were instantly gone. One of the most gratifying repairs to date.

I just got a new inner boot for mine. Now, the silly question is: how do you install it? I mean, it looks like I should remove the chrome extension to get the new one in place, since the hole in the rubber is too small...I'm sure a number of you guys have done this before, just can't figure it out!

Does the foam of the inner boot go towards the top as pictured above or down towards the transmission ? Mine had no boot at all.
