Upper control arm mounting bolt

Post by mdrburchette »

I'm replacing the bushings and ball joints on my 71 Spider so I can take the car to the track to play. There seemed to be excessive play in the control arms so I ordered new mounting bolts, along with the bushings, thinking the bolt was worn but the originals look fine. When I installed just the bolt through the shock tower, there is about 1mm play when I wiggle the bolt in the holes. Is this something to be concerned about? Maybe the holes are wallered (southern word) out? Or is this normal? It's been several years since we did the 72 and we didn't have a reason to check this.

I haven't got that far Mark. I'll work on disassembling the left side before I rebuild the right just to see if there's a difference. I also noticed the lower ball joints I received don't have zirk fittings. Are we sure the bad bj's have disappeared? They came from one of our great Fiat vendors.
