I knew this would happen - fluid loss/stranded.
The first time my Spider has left me stranded since purchased two months ago, and had to call roadside assistance. Granted, the fluid I ran out of was gasoline! Guess I can't blame this on the car so much. I knew the gas gauge didn't work but was certain my range was more than 195 miles. Maybe my odometer is off too?

Hmmm weird, unles you drive at 5000 rpm everywhere. I'd be thinking your 71 would be around 20-24 miles to the US gallon and a tank has about 11.5 US gallon capacity if it is the same tank dimensions as my 80. Range 210- 250 miles to a tank and have a bit more than fumes left.
My 2L FI with mods is around 24 miles/US gallon.

im going to chime in here..... he must drive the way i do... a carbed spider i would stop at no more than 200 miles, and be on empty. on my efi cars i get 230-240 tops. its called lead foot , lots of accelerator pump and running it up thru the gears

Rarely over 4000 rpm and 60-65 mph max. I think I shifted at 5500 rpm once and thought the car was gonna explode. I remember when I ran the car against my GPS the indicated MPH on the speedo was a good 10 MPH over the GPS (car said 75 and GPS said 65). Perhaps dumb question....could odometer be off too and I covered more distance, or would that be the other way around?

what is the diameter of your tire/wheel combination compared to the original specs for the car? If, for example, you're running a lower profile tire than the manufacturer spec on a 13" wheel, your engine is going to turn higher revs and your speedometer is going to read a higher speed than the actual speed as measured by your GPS. Your odometer is also going to spin faster and show higher miles than the actual.

If your speedo reads high, it will indicate more mile driven than actual
Re: I knew this would happen - fluid loss/stranded.
That hurts my case. If odo reads 195 miles it means I ran out of gas with even less ground covered!

I thought most spiders have a 10.4 gallon tank. If the car is not tuned then 19-20 mph is not that out of line.
Buon giro a tutti! - enjoy the ride!

I did as well but read in some spec table somewhere it was was imperial gallons. My memory is getting old though.TX82FIAT wrote:I thought most spiders have a 10.4 gallon tank

I put 10 gallons in and started with zero. I'm going with 10.4!
BTW - I was trying to be funny on criticizing my car for leaving me stranded, Before I bought the car I posted here several times about my angst over being stuck beside the road because of unreliability. Turns out it is me!
