Stalling Issue

Post by josh76 »

Hello All

I just rebuilt my carb, car starts right up, idles okay; however after a few minutes of running the car just stalls. After the car is stalled I walk around back to hear that my electric fuel pump is not working. After starting again, you can hear the pump working, sounds like it is filling the bowl (gurgling as if there is air in it), car starts right up, walk around back while idling you can hear the pump going. . .pump stops. . . the bowl runs dry the car stalls. At least this is what I think is happening. The car will stall quicker at a higher idle, slower at a lower idle which supports the running the bowl dry theory.

Is there a switch or something that would cause the pump to shut off under some circumstance or do I have a fuel pump issue were the pump just stops working or might it be a relay issue??

Thanks for the advice.

first you need to determine if the pump is losing power when it stops running. Use either a test light or voltmeter to check it

Well, when you turn the ignition off and restart it, the pump works.

As I typed the first question I thought of the relay, after typing went back out, pulled the relay out, plugged it back in, and now it seems to work fine (well at least ran for several minutes). So my guess is it is the relay, or electrical connections. I have “sorted” the wiring out, but have not done anything to clean the connections.

I will check the voltage if it happens again.

It has also seemed to even out the idle, and in general run better.
