81,
Those seals may not be leaking but if the same age as the others soon will be. Besides as I have read the exhaust is famous for leaking. They are cheap and can be had quick. I think I saw where napa had them. On the heat shield I saw where someone had used a sheet of cooking grade ss sheeting and that is what I would use. On the bottle I bet You can patch that temporarily and get one from another member here. Clean and sand around the damaged area and try hot glue. Tougher than you think. Look up how to repair AG tanks. Same material. You may know someone that does plastic welding. The oil on top is likely from the cam cover gaskets. Temp would be some high quality gasket maker and later new ones. Again for quiksake you may find them at napa or similar store. Also the oil cap may be leaking. Again new one at napa etc.

great thanks.... do you know what those seals are called.. or a part number.. i can only seem to find the other three engine and distributor seals... if they are cheap and available local i might do that... i think i finish everything i am doing now... then put back on the old belt (just to hold everything in place).. while i loosen the nuts for those cam sprockets... i really worry that something is going to move.... then pop the old belt .. do the top two seals ... put on the new belt and done... i like it... quick cheap and not to much of a delay

patching the over flow tank

for the heat shield i have made a cardboard template and am going to make my own... should be interesting i will keep you updated
cam covers i am assuming are held on by 2 big alan bolts... they were less than finger tight.. gonna try and just tighten those down a bit.... engine is not a show winner but it is the cleanest i have ever seen it and i will be able to now see exactly where any more drips and leaks are coming from

hoping to get most of it back together today

ok so went to goodwill and picked up for 3 bucks 2 trays or platters...... the one on the left is a stainless little app tray... my crude cardboard template in the middle... and what turned out to be a solid silver tray on the right.... the silver tray would have been cooler looking but would take some cutting to fit... the little tray was perfect ... about 10 minutes drilling holes and a little grinding on the top and left edge... viola... heat shield.... let me know what you think.... the purpose of the shield is to protect the distributor cap and the overflow as far as i can tell and i have done that... my only concern is that it will focus the heat maybe a little more on the exhaust cam cover more than normal... should i be worried.... thanks .. Matt

water bottle patch is drying .. fingers crossed ....

no help at the local auto parts stores on upper cam seals... so onward we go

ok the old saying comes true. Neccessaty(sp) is the mother of invention. I think it looks professional. Better than the origianal. Good fab. I think others may be ordering one.

ok this is one for the electrical guys.... radiator is in... little fab work but not too bad... now i am stumped the first pic is of the existing wiring.... A went to the bottom of the old radiator to what i think was a temp switch of some kind... B went to the fan... and then there is a wire that goes to a switch that po put in to turn fan on at will from inside the car.... kinda want it but dont know why... so i could go either way...then the following pictures are what i have from mark....

Image

Image

what is this

Image

thinking that A will go to the new temp switch..... B to the fan.... all should be good right????

also in the instructions is says "attach fan controller near the upper left corner of the radiator. The probe on the fan controller should be pushed into the fins near the upper hose nipple. This is the hottest spot of the radiator"

question... standing in front of the car facing the car... cap is on left and upper hose is on the right... do you think that the upper hose area is the hot spot???

and just push the probe into the radiator like a spear... part way in all the way in ... thanks

The Blue B1 provides "always hot" (unswitched) power to the fan, and the black wires all provide a path to ground, through B2, A2, Fan Switch A (bottom corner of radiator, driver's side) and A1. The tie in to the switch is the overide, to force the fan on regardless of the fan switch position by giving it a path to ground. But I have no idea what the second picture shows...

That blue wire comes directly off of the output side of Fuse #10 "L", (16A) which also serves the horn, so likely that the fuse is blown. No interconnect between these two points that I can see on my diagram here. (1980)

here is another task questiion.... have not done much research and when i do i probably will answer my own question but is it dificult to get at and check the injectors.... is it a maintenance thing or do people just wait for symptoms that would point to them needing attention.... i have the inner and outer seals because i was reading somewhere that they would be needed ... also are there any gaskets required with that process

UPDATE TIME..... radiator is in... it is big... not much room to play with .. but it is in... i shad my own sort of problems with it... at some point the lower front of the car hit something.... you can kind of see it in this pic... instead of a nice rounded lower lip it is flat

Image

besides being flat it was also pushed back and when i tried to fit the radiator the bottom was hitting the crank pulley and the radiator was sticking out the top 8 inches too high,,,, i ended up grinding out the old radiator support all the way... used to be where my hand is now

Image

now that allows me to massage that lower lip out to about where i think it should be.... i plan to reinforce my spoiler with a thin metal strip and pull that lip into shape... thenprobably depending on how stiff that is tacking in a piece where the old support used to be to make it nice and stiff

here it is getting closer

Image

here is a few of the engine bay
before

Image

after

Image

Image

with some custom work in black sharpie from my little helper

Image

bought some soft wire wheels and at the end of cordless drill and a lot of patience then more patience and mothers polish got the plenum (i think) pretty darn shiny

Image

every outside light has been cleaned scraped and greased(bulb sockets and connectors).. need to do some more research on fuse box and what else to inspect and or clean....

got to trace the brown wire comming from the battery and see if po did it right... seems to be looping and jumping around under the dash to a couple of different spots from a quick and uninformed inspection

also gonna deal with this

Image

Image

Image

my plan is to peel it off after making some chalk marks for reference and glue it back on.wash off the chalk and call it a day.. sounds easy

need to find a spot for my washer bottle... car never had one so i dont know where it used to be... think i found the wires that used to feed it.. purple and something... and they terminate in this general area

Image

would like to rid myself of this and put it there

Image

but i dont know what it is and it is hooked up to other things ..... so i am going to clean it and just wonder what could have been..... hahahaha boy i am tired

and one more thing... been reading up on burping.... i have the little brass plug in the T... GONNA JACK THE FRONT ..POP THE PLUG AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.... have yet to start the car ... no oil... no radiator fluid.... but lots of faith... still gonna wait for the oil

as allways comments and suggestions are very very welcome

In your last pic, that is the charcoal canister for the gas tank vapor recovery system. Bottom line goes back to the tank, top to the intake manifold. It vents the gas tank amongst other things. Engine bay looks great! And nice artwork from the little guy. I would think about keeping it.

IT STARTED first try.... tense moment after doing all that work.... yeah me....

update the car started and sounds great... got up to operating temp ... fan kicked in a little early but because of my adjustment setting on the temp switch..... found and tested the wires for the washer pump and no water... found the pinched hose leading to the wiper spray things ... water on the windshield... awesome..never had that before... while i was in there cleaned up and lubed the wipers and all connections.... fabbed a bracket for the washer bottle...waiting for the paint to dry on that then i will install ......

found these online... meritime or something... cant remember just google spider badges and kinda far down the list you will see a pic... they were 2 bucks a piece... i bought 2

Image

and i put one here for fun

Image

also decided i liked this so viola

Image

and the spoiler is in.... it felt a little flimsy to me so i instead of backing it with a metal strip just mixed some resin and sorta reinforced the bend in the spoiler ... it is all behind what you see from the front but man o man it really stiffened up that spoiler... i was worried because of the fab work i did for the radiator and previous accident it would not go well... but i was wrong.... 6 holes 6 nuts and bolts later... i really like the look of a spoiler

Image

the top is going well i have decided to spend a little more time on that front bow before i glue back on the top... it peeled off quite easily

can anyone point me to a thread about how to clean the contacts and things for the fuse panel and behind the dash..i read a lot about it being done but cant seem to find the one thread that shows me how... thanks

i think also because it is getting close to trip time and funds that the injectors will stay the way they are for now... besides the timing belt job just done... the only real "tune uppy" things i did were new plugs , wires . air filter and oil change.... also got the gl-1 to drain and fill the tranny... have not tried to get at the fill plug yet .. but will make sure that is done first

was thinking about posting my route and maybe networking possible break down locations... i know it sounds like planning to fail ... but... would be nice to know someone who might help would where that person/s be located... what do ya think about that???
love the car.... love the work............................... Matt

Great progress...looking good!

I have the same emblem, I put on mine opposite side of the trunk latch on the back...cool little emblems.

Keep up the updates, enjoy seeing the progress.
