Post by steve8462 »

i have a 1979 Fiat spider. the drivers side hood hinge pin is rusted solid in the collar where it slides. i have tried w-d40, pb blaster, hammer and punch, heated it with a torch with no luck. any ideas?- thank you

If it is rusted, and grew into the metal surround, you might have to cut it out, and reconstruct it.

i'm going to try rotating heat one day, WD-40 the next day. keep repeating that for a few days to see where that gets me. i will post my results, if there are any results!

Is the hood on the car?? How accessible is the hinge to work on??
I have drilled a couple 1/8 inch holes in the hinge bracket through to the pin and spayed PB Blaster in the holes. That with heat and a hammer and patience did the job.

i alternated heat then PB blaster then wiggle, heat then PB blaster then wiggle, and within the course of an hour it finally loosened up and slid out. (i think i was starting to catch a buzz from the smoking PB Blaster  ) once out, i cleaned it up with Emory paper to ensure smooth moving parts, then slathered it with anti-seize and put it back together. i took the hood off to do this. a fiat will bring out the best and worst in yourself!! i actually invented two new curse words in this process!!
