Stock Hood
Stock Hood
I am trying to figure out what the stock hood should be for my 72. I have seen pictures of the small bulges, the large ones, but mine came with a smooth hood. I am looking to replace it as the pivot areas where the hinge goes into are damaged and one has a broken weld already. I know a late model hood will fit as long as the hinges are replaced with late model ones.
Just curious what the car is suppose to have on it.
Thanks
Jeremy

Re: Stock Hood
It's supposed to be flat. Here's a picture of my old '72 taken in '72.

Re: Stock Hood
Thanks, how important is it to the forum to keep it original? I have mixed feelings about it.
Thanks

Re: Stock Hood
well.. as is the case about any opinion.... we vary on stock vs non-stock.
Me, personally: I say go with whatever you like... no thought necessary for what was original.

Flat hood for US spec cars, small bulges for euro spec cars.
If you convert to a Spider 2000 hood you not only need the hinges, but also need to modify the hood stay.
Either weld the early style to the new hood, or use the spring type late one with the late hood.
If I were you I'd either repair your original hood, or find a better smooth or small bump hood. The large bump
hood is going to look a bit weird to anybody that knows these cars.

Re: Stock Hood
I'm with Maytag. My guess is that the Forum view of stock vs non stock is probably as varied as there are members on the forum. My car is pretty much stock, for two reasons - one, is that I kind of like it that way. Two is that with our government owned insurance company, I can get much cheaper collector car insurance rates if I maintain stock or "period" related modifications.
However - you won't find much criticism from this bunch for whatever you decide to do with your car - unless, of course, you decide to turn it into something that looks British...

Re: Stock Hood
big difference in an 80 (big bump) vs a flat hood. 80 hood has bigger hinge pins, that horrible center spring support, and a different latch pin. Also the 80s hood has a blunt nose allowing for a taller filler neck on the radiator.

Re: Stock Hood
I did this along time ago and didnt like it. I put a large 79 hood on a 71. It fit but not as nice as an early hood. the seam between the fender and hood was larger with the later hood on both sides. A flat hood is gonna be hard to find, a small bump hood will be easier to find. Good luck.
Re: Stock Hood
What years had the small bump on the cars? Looks like the large one started in 79, so I would assume the smooth and small bump was up till then?
Spiderrey - thanks for the feedback on what you tired and how it turned out. I am a big fan of nice tight lines and gaps, I might end up trying to find one for my year either the smooth or small bump one.
Thanks

Smooth to 72. Small 72 thru 78.
Re: Stock Hood
Interesting! The "New" "80 type" spring hood stay was standard on all the 124 Coupes AC, BC & CC, from 1969.vandor wrote:> I am trying to figure out what the stock hood should be for my 72

They are different, on the Spider 2000 you do not have to unhook the latch to lover to hood. When it's all the way up it pops into a wider area in the spring, so you just need to overcome extra spring resistance to lower it.
