Luggage Rack

Post by cbrown1469 »

Hi fellow Spider enthusiasts,

Firstly, I can't tell you how much I love this site, it is brilliant.

What is the concensus on chrome luggage racks on Spiders? I really like them as I think they ake the car look more classic. What do you guys think...... Cool or sacrilidge?

Thanks as always,

C

Man, this is one of those areas that is completely subjective. A matter of personal taste. Estheticaly I am not a fan of them, but I guess there is some practicality to it, considering the size of the trunk? <{:^) When my wife and I go to Cruise Nights around here, we can fit (just barely) 2 folding chairs flat in the trunk. So I would also be curious as to whether people who have them also use them?

I've used mine to carry a sofa when I was moving. But I was only moving across the apartment complex where I lived at the time. This was in 1981. I have used it some since.

Ideally, one would have (at least) two Spiders: one with rack, one without. Look at the red car at the top of the page: sublime. But then, a rack gives that certain je ne sais quoi that screams out for a classic wicker picnic basket and a Sunday jaunt out in the country.

Agree that it's totally subjective. Personally, I feel the same way about luggage racks as I do about the trim pieces that go down the side of the car like on the red one above. They ruin the lines of an otherwise classic look.

I had a rack on for several years. Took it off a bit better than a year ago and I like the lines on my car better without.

After you removed the rack, how did you fill the holes or did you use some type of plug? I am curious to try this also but not sure what to do with the holes after I removed it.

Thanks

I'm a live and let live kinda guy, but there will never be a rack on my Spider.

I feel the same way about hardtops, but plenty of guys love them.

c'est la vie!

I took the lid to a body shop and they welded the holes closed and painted with the paint I supplied.
I have seen pics with small plugs till they figured out when to weld the holes closed.

Don't have a rack on mine, but kinda like them...I do aim to get a spare boot (trunk) so I can have one with and one without and swap as my mood sees fit......

My 72 does not have a L rack, but my 71 (parts car) does, and I think it looks kinda classy. As I have several trunk lids, I may take Divace73's idea....

Funny - I bought a luggage rack from Chris (Narfire) and put it on my car. I like the look. I have some antique luggage that looks kind of cool strapped to the rack.

I like my rack as well. I have a bag full of straps in the trunk and use it quite a bit for bringing home large stuff from shopping plus that oversize piece of luggage my wife has ... the one she uses for 10 outfits and 14 pairs of shoes for a weekend trip. :D

A week?? Ron's trailer wouldn't cut it. That's when we have to use the Toyota van in the background. Last time we went to Vegas for a week, we filled 2 of the hotel luggage carts ... the valet asked me where the rest of our party was.
