Dyeing convertible top

Post by jerryrigger »

I'm considering dyeing a convertible top. Is this possible or will it just crack from the folding and unfolding of the top?
Anyone had experience with dyeing? Has anyone tried this themselves?

Unless you plan to replace in the near future, my advice would be. Don't.
That was also the advice given to me by a trimmer as I wanted to dye my tan top black.
Problems vary from materialto material, but flaking, and general good adherance to to top are main probs.
Vinyl paints tend to crack on tops.
I've since replaced mine with a black top. Very nice.

Vinyl and leather dyes aren't interchangeable. You could probably get away with using one on the other, but they are formulated for their own specific medium. Just like you would be able to use a regular can of spray paint on bare aluminum, but it wasn't designed for that, and it won't give you ideal results.

Good dye designed particularly for the fiber will hold up. You can go to a professional auto paint store to ask. They usually run much more expensive than spray can paint. I purchased some tan colored dye 2 years ago for a client, it cost about $68 per quart, and that's not the best one at all. Sprayed really good, covered incredibly.
