Help, floor panel replacement

Post by azygoustoyou »

:?
I am going to start repairing my floors on my 1978 124. New panels don't offer enough metal to fill in all the space that needs replaced. I have a mig welder and was wondering if, when I go to replace the metal, should I just spot weld the metal in and fill the rest with an epoxy? Or should I try to weld the entire area in? Also should I overlap the panels when designing them? I do realize I should make more than one panel and join them together to add strength to the area. The rust even runs up the fire wall some. Here's the pic, but can't get it to come up

Hi Brady, just in case you missed it http://www.metalmeet.com/forum/index.php Is a good place to get some info. Its easy to buckle and warp panels when welding them back in, I dont think you should try and totally weld them. Ive got a similar project with my old Fiat, but am not far enough along to share any good info. I would suggest doin some experimental welds on similar metals. And remember the 30 minute rule after welding, garages are flamable!

Hey Dave, is the 30 minute rule the one that says not to go swimming for 30 minutes after welding?

That's a common misconception, the real rule is you can't fly for 30 minutes after welding. The no swimming rule is for after working with explosives.

Thank God you cleared that up for me Gunsmith. When I think of all the times I just finished handling explosives and went right ahead and jumped in the lake, ooooh, makes me shudder!
