Deep Cleaning Chrome

Post by 124Germ »

I have looked through this section and can not find any answers. My luggage rack really needs some work with the chrome. No deep pitting yet, but tried some chrome polish and it took the roughness off the rack but not the pitted look.

Anyone know how I could get it closer to stock looks other than having it re-chromed. If I re-chrome this rack then I feel I will have to re-chrome the rest of the pieces to match.

Thanks for your help.

Thats awesome, I will give it a try tomorrow and let you know how it looks. If I remember I will try to get some before and after shots.

Thanks for the tip

That is amazing! I never heard of such a thing. I would assume that some of the Aluminum foil is rubbed off into the pits and slightly fills them?

at first I was skeptical, however, many have used :? I actually saw one that showed to use with coke?!? the acid in the coke would help clean the pitting then the aluminum foil would fill. I will have to try it on Fiona and of course document the results (if any)

I suspect that it wouldn't hold up well outdoors, probably put some wax on afterwards...

So I tried the aluminum foil with water and it took the roughness out of it and made it smooth, but didn't restore the shine like I hoped. Maybe I will have to try the foil with Coke next time; either that or I'm not working at it hard enough.

Open for any other ideas.

Thanks

the foil works at removing the rust and making the surface relatively smooth again (i think its just a metallurgic reaction) but will not restore any shine. Once pitted badly enough the rust is gone from the steel. This is a great way to clean light oxidation surface rust off chrome however and when combined with a protective polish afterwards is hard to beat.

George is right, there are protective polishes that you apply a couple times a year that really protect with metal with a wax mixture, the eagle one chrome/aluminium polish works great, finally restoring my rims after 12 years....lol...ill be using the stuff tonight.
