rear of the car.
Any guesses as to what it was?
No it wasn't a brake caliper, or a wheel bearing or a parking brake cable on a wheel weight......
Nope none of those.
After using a cut down broom stick as a stethescope, with the car jacked up and secured.
With the car running in fourth gear I was finally able to reproduce the sound to locate it.
It was obvious I had to remove the third member (pumpkin) from the axle housing.
Only to find that one of the bolts that secures the ring gear to the cage had backed out and was milling metal off of the inside of the bearing cap and axle housing! WTF?!!?!?!?!????????
It appears that somewhere in the past, a previous owner had rear axle work done and the bolts for this assembly were not torqued properly. I checked the rest of them and they were also loose.
Ever seen that?

I've never seen it but some mechanics' abilities never cease to amaze me. Did it do much damage or can you tighten the bolts and be okay?

I could use it as is now that I have secured all the related bolts.
But I have another third member that is in better shape that I plane to install tonight after I get home from work.
Live and learn.

I once had a similar issue with a race-bike. I opened the cases to search-out a knock, only to find that one of the bolts holding the starter-motor in was loose (not even in threads any longer, but still in the "well") and was intermittently hitting the gear & dogs.
However: the mechanic that I had build the motor that time was one of my very good friends and a factory KTM mechanic as well. one of the most highly-regarded tuner / mechanics in the motorcycle world.
Things happen. If you start seeing a pattern of things happening... time to look for a new guy to work on your stuff!
your PO was probably a very nice guy....
I'm no Boy-Racer..... but if I can't take every on-ramp at TWICE the posted limit.... I'm a total failure!
