Wing window problem

Post by Taz »

I have a 81, 2000 that I am replacing damaged/worn parts on. Thanks to the members of the forum things a going pretty good. I'm having a problem keeping the locking mechanism for the wing windows attached to the glass. Twice I have cleaned the glass and lock, applied mirror adheasive, clamped them for 24 hrs only to have them come off within a month. What's the trick to keep them on ? Is there an after market locking unit available ? :?:

One of mine was in the glovebox. It had pulled some of the glass off the window. I cleaned it up, but have not reinstalled yet.

I tried the new Loctite single part "glass" adhesive and it has worked so far. Cleaned the local glass area with paint thinner and roughed up the back of the latch with a wire brush chucked in the drill press. Clamped overnight. So far so good. The trick I am told is to never latch them unless needed, so I leave mine unstressed. But I have left them closed for awhile and all seems well. Time will tell.

Ha Ha Ha! Good timing: My Loctite "glass" adhesive just let go after about a month. JB Weld next time for sure.

Mine were missing from the day I got her (did find 1 in the trunk) so I have replaced them with latches that wrap around the glass & slide over the inner frame to latch.

These are sold as VW units, someone posted about them a while back so I took the shot.
installed in just minutes & work great.

Clever application! Do they dig into or compromise the rubber seal at all?

I had the originals from the PO, couldn't get them to hold, so I purchased these as well. Very easy to install, doesn't seem to cause any trouble with the rubber, and although not as pretty, they certainly won't pop off while you're driving down the road and cause a spotting in your Hanes!

looks like y'all have found a good solution for this... But I'm gonna ask anyway: Why? :D

Is this about security? in which case, do you also lock your car doors?
Or is it about wind-noise 'cuz they won't stay closed? (I actually prefer running with them open to direct more air into the car most of the time)

No these don't dig into the rubber, there is a piece of foam that attaches to the wing window glass & the latch slides over that & the only place it actually touches is where the slide contacts the window frame to lock it.

why? guess to replace whats missing & what the heck they are only $10

GOTCHA.
Both of mine fell off long ago, and I haven't bothered to reattach. I haven't seen a need. I don't lock my doors, 'cuz then they cut the top to get in.

Well if the car sees a rain shower, the vent windows would be a little better sealed with the wings than not. I don't latch them either, unless there is an imminent threat of rain and I don't have the cover with me. (this thing's my big baby, and I am always in fear that it will melt) <{:^)
