Down under

Post by courtenay »

Finishing our second week in Oz and all I've seen so far is a mid '60's Alpha and a few old MG's. I know it's Fall here, but the weather is fantastic for top down driving. I expected to see a lot more ragtops down here - even a few Spiders.

How fun!
You could call Adrian, or Curly, two different parts of the country, but they'd know where the Spiders are hiding.

I'm hoping they'll chime in, Ron. We've been to Tasmania and are currently in Perth. Heading back towards Sydney on Sunday (next). We're going to do a bit of a driving tour through the Blue Mountains and then spend 3 days in Manly before heading back to Courtenay. We're traveling with our son, Aussie daughter in law and one year old grandson and having a fantastic time. Oz is a beautiful country!

Just heading back into Fremantle after a couple of days in Eagle Bay. We'll be in Freo 'till Sunday then to Uluru for a couple of days before heading to Sydney. We're going to do a 4 day driving tour of the Blue mts and Hunter Valley. Final stop before heading home will be 3 nights based in Manly whilem we tour Sydney.

Chris - we do miss CJ but we do have a really nice girl staying at the house with her.

I have to say that the people and the weather down here are very much alike - very warm and friendly!

Adrian - got your note and will try to give you a call when we get to Manly.

G'day (as we say over here!). I live just near Fremantle, would love to catch up if you're staying around that part of town. I can provide cold beers tomorrow from about 5pm if you want to come around - just PM me or call me on 0419 916 241.

It doesn't look like you'll be any where near my neck of the woods, so I haven't got much to offer.
HOWEVER, if you are anywher near Canberra on Sunday April 15th, you MUST go to AUTO ITALIA, the biggest and best Italian car and bike show in the country where I can guarantee you'll find any number of 124 Spiders and Coupes as well as Alfas, Ferraris, Lambos etc. You can't miss the location, it's on the lawns in front of the old Parliament House.

Home again, after a wonderful month touring Australia. The Australian Fall is a great time to visit for us Northern Hemisphere folks as the weather is a bit cooler than in the Oz summer so easier to take.
We did enjoy meeting up with Giles - aka Perthling - and seeing his toy box. His Spider is tucked in behind the wagon.

The reason you didn't see many spiders there is that there aren't a lot to see. Wheeled ones that is, sure are lots of big hairy 8 legged ones !
Being LHD only, they simply were not marketed there as not possible to rego LHD as new cars. The only ones were as personal imports but you had to have lived overseas and owned the car for X amount of time before taking it home. In some states, you could then not sell the car without converting to RHD and meeting the ADR drama ( Aussi design rules).
Same here in NZ but it got easier to import & rego once they were 21 years old.
