Keeping it sharp - paint, wax, detailing, etc.

original side trim molding

Post by spider2081 »

My 81 Spider 2000 is being painted and I would like to reinstall the original side moldings. They were riveted on with a vinyl insert. The vinyl is badly weathered and I would like to replace with new.
Does anyone know where I might purchase the moldings new???

I don't have them here to take a photo. I guess that is what I need to try next.
Thanks Mark for the info

This site has vinyl insert moldings for rivet-on trim: http://www.customautotrim.com/products/ ... /rivet.htm

Looks like they only have black, white, and silver inserts. You may be able to dye or paint the vinyl to a desired color as long as you prep the material properly so you get a long-lasting result.

So Cal Mark is right... there were a lot of variations. Hopefully the site above has a match for you.

Good luck!

Thanks I called and they are sending a sample. It looks identical to what I have. The insert on mine is a light blue and is really in bad shape. My car is the dark blue metallic so I think the silver will look great. Thanks for you help.

You might want to try Deluxe Auto Molding in Chatsworth, CA phone 818 718-7600 (no website); JC Whitney used to sell their product and it was available in several vinyl colors which pressed into the aluminum molding (screwed or riveted to the body). If you use this type of molding, be sure to make the vinyl strip a little long as will shrink some with time and you will then have a small gap to the tapered end cap.
