Upholstery issues

Post by kbee00 »

I have searched all over for upholstery for my '82 124. Upholstery World will not sell only the front seat sets - must be full front and rear - what??? IAP's are out of this world expensive, Vicks are OK - but almost as much as Upholstery World's full set price.

Anybody have any ideas out there that they have tried and worked out? Hoping someone with a new idea pops in....

Otherwise it's off to Vick's.......

Thank you very much for your help.

I have used spider-point for several parts, they are in Germany, however they have very competitive pricing. Remember when you look at their price sheet that here is a 20% tax, however customers outside the EU do not pay this. Right now the euro is good with the dollar.....camparitively. I am going to buy their custom interior for my cat, I have not priced out just seat covers. You can download their catalog and price sheet.

They have excellent customer service, however due to time zones, (I am on the West coast), it is easier to use e-mail

Thanks Pat. I have seen their website but due to the shipping distance and the weak dollar, I never considered them. I will look again.

I am close to doing my upholstry and only want the front covers as well. I was going to contact world of upholstry. Guess not. I also found this but have not contacted them. My friend used them for some VW Bug stuff.

Why not take it to an upholstery shop and have them reupholster from scratch? I did and I'm totally chuffed with the results. It looks absolutely like factory new.

I'm with jimb on this one. If youre looking for good bang for the buck, jump in your low rider and head down to your local barrio. Nice thing about buying local, is you can see the guys work and you can also spec the quality of materials used.

I understand where you are coming from - but I promised myself that I would do whatever I could on my own - leaves me more money for goodies... for instance - had a hot motor built by Apex that will go in my '82. So I need to do my own upholstery....

Now if you saying it is cheaper to have someone else do it - then it is a win-win and I am all for that. Just hard to see how that could be...

thanks for all the input

One thing to keep in mind if you are using an off the shelf kit is the condition of the foam. I have seen new lower pads, approx. $100, but I have not seen replacement back foam pads. These pads shrink and compress with age and use, even the best cover will look bad over old foam. Most upholstery shops can custom fit pads which in the long run may be cheaper .......?

I decided to take the advice to have it done and am having a couple of local shops give me an estimate.

My biggest concern is the quality of an aftermarket purchased set - how is the fit, am I going to be fighting it all the way, and since I have never done this before, I wouldn't even know how to work around fitment problems. But, I am always one to try new things but hopefully the shops can do it for a reasonable price.

I decided to start a new thread on my restoration. 1982 Reborn.

Thanks again for your help everyone.

at the seat factory that was in town they would put a bag over the foam and vacume out the air so the cover slides right over, its a very thin plastic bag
