Emergency Survival Kit Recommendations - 350 mi Run

Post by supplyguy »

Sorry if overdoing this. By now few don't know about my plan to pick up my 1971 124 in Cleveland and drive it home in a day to Virginia (350 miles). Would welcome recommendations on critical tools/equipment/spares/McGuyver-like supplies I should either take with me or buy in Cleveland before beginning the drive back (will be flying in to get the car). Many thanks - Chuck.

Brief history below:

4 new tires - fall 2011; Engine block seals replaced 2009; Brake pads and line work 2009; New Weber rebuilt carb installed 2009; Replaced wiper mechanism 2010; New mechanical fuel pump 2009; New shocks all around 2009; Replaced original stereo with a cassette and 6 disc changer (CD magazine is trunk mounted) - custom front speakers and boxes and a sub for the back seat (UNreal sound!) - 2010. New wire set, rotor and cap and oil cap 2009; New belts 2009; Electronic Ignition replaced 2008. New model air filter attached 2009. Compression is excellent, oil pressure is excellent and the timing has been adjusted so it runs very smooth.

The 5 speed manual transmission shifts well, the boot cover looks good, the heater and blower work, wipers work, all lights/brights and hazards work, defrost and floor controls work, all gauges except the clock work, seat adjusters work and no rust on any floor panels! Great on gas and quick off the mark. Nice exhaust tips with a cool throaty growl :)s)

Some bailing wire, 10,13,17,19 mm wrench, pliers, quart of oil, bit of electrical wire and some butt conectors, Fully charged cell phone, some rags, and a small fire extuingisher.
Have all that..... you won't be needing it by the sounds of it. If you put it in the trunk, secure with a bungie cord or something so it does not slide around. Check on the state of the spare tire and jack. Need 19mm or 3\4 socket for wheel bolts.

Duct tape or black electrical tape. A pocketknife would be nice but, airport security won't be too happy.

Don't forget a standard and Philips screwdriver, a bath towel (just in case) in addition to the rags narfire recommends, and, of course, a roll of duct tape!

Glad to hear you found a Spider! Congratulations :!:

Open the fuse box under the steering wheel and pinch on the ends of the fuse holders whilst rotating the fuse back and forth, if there are any loose ones remove the fuse and pinch the holder a bit and re-install.

Remember those brakes :)

I don't see a problem. I think she will make the trip fine. All the tools recommend and a bottle of Kentucky bourbon. Don't break the seal until you are home safe and sound or in your motel room. Have fun and drive safely.

When I was in college I would ferry back and forth between school and home about twice a semester(about 250 miles one way) All I had was the grey toolkit. No cell phone, no aaa card, no credit card. Never was stranded not even close. Literally you could bring a parts car and your whole toolbox. If something is gonna go you will still be screwed.

Have fun your car will be fine.

Just get in and drive it!! If somethings gonna happen, it's gonna happen out there! And if ya get lost, just pull in somewhere and ask directions!!(Captian Ron quotes)... Remember, the adventure is not the final destination, but the journey to get there.
