Rubber bumper corners

Post by SanRafaelFaz »

I'm trying to remove as much as I can for my soon to come paint job. How do I get the rubber corner sections off the (pipe style) bumper on my '78? :? Also, any advice on removing the door handles and side marker lights?
TIA!

theres covers on the back side of the bumpers, remove them
unbolt the bumper
if you brake a stud you screwed
pretreat with PB blaster.youll see how they unbolt

door handles are nuts on the inside of door
remove the skin and look for them (2)

the side markers are nutted from the bak also
7mm i think

again use PB blaster and let sit 1 hour at least and go slow
when you do everything correct people arent sure youve done anything at all (futurama)

Thanks, Joe. I'll try the bumpers tonight. Got the side markers off quite easily. They are all intact and in good shape for having been on there for 34 years. Didn't realize they were plastic, though. :?:

OK, instaed of messing around with trying to just remove the rubber corners, I'd like to just remove the entire front/rear bumpers. Looking underneath the front, I see what appears to be a bracket where the bumper shock goes in to. It looks to be held on with 3 or 4 bolts. Will removing these bolts release the whole bumper assembly? The rear is another issue. No idea how they are attached as I haven't yet looked for access to them. Anything I need to onow before I tackle them this weekend?
TIA...again!

leave the brackets on
just remove the big bolt
one per side
the rear drivers side has the tank in the way because the bolts are from the inside
so on that one remove the shock bolts from the bumper

Cool! Thanks, I'll give that a shot. By "big bolt", do you mean the one that looks like it goes right through the piston/shock thingie?

yes remove one from each side and disconnect the lights and pull it off,

on the rear, remove the tire in the trunk and then the bolt on pass side

Well, that didn't work, LOL! I removed the big bolt which goes through the end of the shock, both sides.I put jack stands under each side to help with support. I could shake the bumper and it's loose, but it looks to be still attached by a "U" bracket, inside of which is a big rubber bushing. I didn't have the energy to try and remove those tonight, and I'm not even sure that would do the trick.
Maybe tomorrow night?

Got the front bumpers loosened. Question: How/where do the blinkers unplug? :?:

Yes the blinkers do unplug but you have to follow the wires up thru the inner fender area above the tire, thru a grommet into the engine compartment, unplug wires/connectors there & feed them back thru the grommet to the inside of the fender, etc.
