Fuel Sender Replacement

Post by RRoller123 »

Any tricks to replacing the fuel sender unit in the tank? I am sure that many of us have done this. I am going to be doing this task shortly. Other than the obvious no smoking safety issue, are there any other issues to be aware of? I believe that with ignition off (and probably battery disconnected for further safety?), and gas tank cap off there should be no tank pressure? Just bolts right in? Any special clamps needed? etc. etc. It is important that I get this right. Thanks for your guidance! Pete.

Did this a few months ago, one tip I can offer is don't over tighten the fuel tank studs. I broke one off doing that. :(

Be careful and don't drop one of the small nuts into the gas tank. Don't ask me why I mention this  If this happens a small magnet on a probe is how to retrieve it.

The nuts take a 7mm socket. This is a good time to inspect the condition of the inside of the gastank.

Can I use a match like Moe did to inspect the inside of the tank?

I just did this Sunday, took all of ten minutes. Like others said, be careful not to drop any bolts down inside, relieve the pressure by loosening the gas cap first, and have a paper towel close by to wipe up any fuel spilled from the hoses you remove. Also, for wiring, red/gray wire goes to W terminal, blue/yellow wire goes to the T terminal. Best to hook up wires and push down little covers before putting fuel lines back on (tight fit). The W and T should be stamped on the outer rim of the sending unit cover. If you haven't already, this is also a good time to change out the rubber fuel lines.
