car wants to stall at every stop

Post by Weelan »

So if I pull up to a stop it pretty ,such stalls every time unless I put my feet on all the pedals... haha. I have to keep the revs up or it stalls. Even while pulling up to the stop. Is it the idle something or other? That's my bet but I don't know where to look.

I'm actually having the same issue. My timing and mixture have been adjusted. I can drive for a few miles fine, then stall at every stop. Starts back up ok, but continues to die at every stop. Barely made it home tonight. :?

Check for vacuum leaks.

turn up your idle screw to900 rpm
when warm

you could advance your timing again
if you go too far it will backfire out the exh when you turn it off

loosen the dis 17mm wrench andturn counterclock wise with it running so you can hear it hold an idle
then tighten it back up

i would only do this if i cant get the carb to set at and idle

wheelan
your carb will go out tomarrow

Woohoo new Carb! Your check will too! Can't wait.

On that note, is this problem going to react differently with the bigger Carb? I'm guessing easier to stall, but ya I'm going to try turning the idle up. That definitely sounds like the problem. If that doesn't fix it I'll try the other suggestions and report back.

*edit*(says to self)duh Ryan of course it will depend on the carb...

how fast is it idling now? You may have just masked a problem by cranking the idle up

With your car safely in your driveway, idling and in neutral, push on the brake pedal and listen in the area around the pedal. Do you hear a loud sucking sound? If you do, your brake booster diaphragm is busted. It will create a large vacumn leak when you push on the brake pedal. While the revs are up it won't be as noticeable, but at a stop when the RPMs are low, the vacumn leak will stall the engine.

Oh hm... I have it idling at just under 1k.
I'm not home now, so I don't know about that, but I have a loud sucking sound when I just barely press the accel. Is that bad?

that sounds like a leak
unless its coming from the top of the carb

Well I only heard the sound when I had the hood up and the air filter off. I'll check when I get home though, and check the brake vacuum too.

Yup, pretty sure there's a vacuum leak. With the engine cold and when in neutral, if I just barely give it gas it make a loud suction noise and if I hold the pedal still in that range it stalls in about 2 seconds. So... what part do I need to check?

My guess is the little can in the bottom left?

Also, this is not the stock carb, it's a 26/27 Weber of some sort. The only other hose connected is the one coming from the dizzy. Just trying to give any info possible.

Oh and no auction sound from the brakes btw.

The little can in the bottom left is the fuel filter, so its not that. It also appears there is another fuel filter in the extreme bottom left of the picture.

The booster hose is the large diameter cloth braided hose at the bottom right in the photo, however it appears its not hooked up to the intake manifold and all the vacume ports on the manifold have been removed and blocked off.

The carb is being held down with bolts in stead of studs and nuts. The bolts can loosen over time, check them and tighten if necessary.
