I mixed up a known good trany with a likely bad one by not marking them when I stored them together. The two have distinct serial #'s, one with the following-
SEAT
A 128003 OO
2B
The other-
422067
124A100
X5
Although I'm uncertain if each was original to the cars, one was a '76 and the other an '80 and both are 5-speeds. I imagine that referencing these is a shot in the dark but any ideas are appreciated, thanks!

Re: Do trany serial #'s identify production year?
I'll add what I've learned since first inquiring about distinctions in trany marking related to production dates. I came across this thread [http://www.fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=6142] after doing another Google search for Fiat SEAT tranys. I then called IAP and confirmed that the SEAT tranys came on later model Spiders. Of the 3 tranys I have 2 are marked SEAT and I knew one of those came out of an '81. The other 2 came from a '76 and '80 so I can now feel fairly confident that the '80 had a SEAT and the '76 a non-SEAT and so it must be the known good trany.

Not sure how clever I am but I didn't have to un-can anything. However I do appreciate your reminder to check for metal since I often overlook the obvious. Kidding aside, atleast I learned about the Spanish S.E.A.T. car company now affiliated with VW after other partnerships in its long history including a lengthy one with Fiat and Lancia Beta through the 70's, thus my 2 tranys marked SEAT and serial #s starting with 128.
Good to hear some irony way up here in the North country 124JOE!
