Still not running??

Post by Chihua33 »

Changed the fuel lines, plugs, cleaned the tank and it's still not running. It will turn over and
Act like it wants to stay running but just die out? I have seafoam in it
To try and clean it out....am I missing something?

Well you're not giving us much to go on here. Has the car been sitting for quite a while? Perhaps your carburetor needs to be cleaned. Do you have spark? We need more info to help....

Well, it's an 82 fuel injected. It did sit for some years before I bought it.
It will turn over and sounds like it wants to keep running but then it will just die out.
If you give it a little gas it will rev up a little and then die out.

It sounds like you are loosing fuel pressure. You need to put a pressure gage on the fuel system to see if you are mantaining fuel pressure.

What would be the cause of loosing fuel pressure? Bad fuel pump?

When the pump is running I can feel gas going to the fuel pressure regulator, but I don't have the tools to check the pressure. It cranks and turns over, idles for a second or two and then cuts out, and when it cuts out I can hear something under the glove box clicking...is that normal?

Your double relay that runs the fuel pump is under the glove box. One of the relays turns on fuel pump whenever the ignition switch is turned to the start position. The other relay is turned on by the AFM. This happens whenever air is going throuh it. That is whenever the engine is running. Is your air hose hooked up between the engine and the AFM, and in good shape with NO leaks. It could be a bad double relay, a bad switch in the AFM, or a sticking flap in the AFM. I am not saying that is the only things it could be, but this is what comes to mind to me. I am thinking problems with the AFM because it is stoping after start up. There are some good threads on this.

As I suggest to others, find someone with a working AFM. Switch theirs in for yours, it takes about 5 minutes. If the car runs well, you will know it is the AFM without hunting and wondering.

It sounds like you're running on the cold start injector only. It will spray for a few seconds and then stop. You should check that your injectors are pulsing. A noid light is best for this, you can borrow one at the auto parts stores that have a loaner program. Pull a connector off of an injector, plug in the noid light and see if the light pulses. If not check the two grounds at the rear/outermost two bolts on the intake plenum. You can also troubleshoot the dual relay with this guide;

If nobody near you can check your fuel pressure for you, you can get a pretty good idea if it's in the neighborhood by pulling the short hose off of the cold start valve, point the hose into a container and crank the engine. You should get a good strong flow of fuel. You can also check fuel flow without cranking the engine by putting the key in the "run" position and moving the flap open in the AFM.
