Should I consider painting my center console and dash

Post by contrevi »

Has anyone heard of painting their center console and dash to make it look new again? Mine has no cracks but a bit faded. I was wondering if anyone knew if it was a good idea to repaint these to make them look new again.

It is very common to do so. Use SEM vinyl paint if you want the best result. Here's what mine looks like after painting it to match the seats.

The vinyl paint does not require a primer. Just do a good job cleaning it, sand the vinyl lightly with 320 grit sandpaper just to scuff the surface and spray on the vinyl paint. It doesn't work as well on hard plastic. It tends to scrape off hard plastic. It sticks great to vinyl though!

The seat covers were purchased from World Upholstery. They were very reasonable in price, but the fit wasn't the greatest. It took some finesse to get everything to fit right and I had to have the replace one head rest and one seat bottom because they were sewed incorrectly. They were very fast about replacing the parts. Now that the vinyl has been on the seats for a while, it looks much better than in the photos.

The carpet is the cornrow style indoor outdoor carpet from Lowes. I cut the set using my original carpeting. I think it cost me about $40 for the carpet and took just a few hours to cut it and install it. The rubber floor mats are from the original carpeting. I kept them because they are in perfect shape and keep the carpeting looking original.

It is a really good idea to use the "prep spray" that they recommend. It is a solvent that cleans the surface well. I needed to use it two-three times on my door panels (after washing and drying them) to get uniform coverage appearance and to keep from getting any fisheyes. It definitely seems to enhance the adhesion of the vinyl paint.
