82 gas tank
82 gas tank
Hello all
I'm trying to drain the tank on my 82 that has had gas sitting in it for many years...I pulled the line leading into the fuel pump and a little bit of gas came out, but I know that there is more in the tank. I also unscrewed the cap so that there wasn't an air lock, but still nothing came out. Tried jacking up the rear end and still nothing more??
Am I missing something?
also, once I get the gas drained out I want to take the whole tank out, but I noticed that the clamps that hold all the lines to the tank are metal bands that you can't loosen up? do I have to just cut these off? And if I'm going to go to this extent would it just be better to cut them all off and buy all new lines? I'm guessing that this would be the right idea...
Any help would be great! Thanks in advance!

Re: 82 gas tank
the bands are to be cut
and replace with hose clamps
pour 2 cup of new gas in and see if 2cups comes out
if its been in there a long time the gas may have dryed out
untill there was very little left
unfortualy it also settles in you injectors
dont forget the fill and vent tubes
i used a window foam "closed cell"to seal it back up
after clean up and paint
and replace with hose clamps

Re: 82 gas tank
not a spray
its on a roll with sticky back
i cleaned and painted the tank and trunk
then after it dryed i use it for the seal around the opening
and replaced the tank

Re: 82 gas tank
When I first got the car I put 2 gallons of gas in it and that's not what came out. This car actually ran for me for a bit.
Being stupid I tried starting it with the new gas that I put in and whatever was in the tank from sitting. So I'm hoping that the injectors are fine. I guess what I will end up doing is just cutting all of the lines and just taking the tank out and probably taking it somewhere to get cleaned.

Re: 82 gas tank
Well, it "ran" by feathering the gas and then it would die. But I'm assuming dirty gas is a good part of my problem

Re: 82 gas tank
Finally got my tank out, and it doesn't look all that bad inside....with the seafoam do you just put it in and let it sit? or mix it around inside?

Re: 82 gas tank
The website shows applications with tank installed engine running etc., however, I am sure you can use it as a cleaner (see attached)

Re: 82 gas tank
Perfect! Thank you, I think this is just what I need.
I think I will try this first and if this doesn't do the trick then I'll have to take it in somewhere and have it professionally done.

Re: 82 gas tank
Got my tank cleaned out tonight and now I'm going parts shopping tomorrow to get new lines and filters.
That filter with the three lines running off of it, is this something that is special order for Fiat? or should I be able to get that from an auto store? there is also another filter under the car before the fuel pump if I'm not mistaken?

Re: 82 gas tank
I don't believe it is a filter. It is the fuel vapor seperator that is between the tank and the charcoal canister in your engine caprtment. I orderd one, but after taking the tank out and replacing the rubber with new rubber, I just cleaned my old one and put it back in. Put the new one on the shelve for a spare.
