Clutch Problem

I have a 84 Azzurra. The clutch pedal is held down on the floorboard just like it's springloaded! It gave a snapping noise when it failed. Before I start looking, does anyone out there know what could be the problem?

probably broke the clutch cable

ill bet its the pedal end
ether the fork that holds the cable broke
or the cable end snaped off

but i think its the first one

I'm going to go with the barrel on the end of the cable at the pedal clutch fork end. Hope you were close to home when it happened.

Thanks everyone for the info. This is why I joined this forum. I saw quick answers and a genuine concern for people and their problems. I was very lucky when this happened---I was backing out of the garage! I'll check into the areas mentioned and get back to you with the results. I've never replaced a pedal before but I know now that I can get a lot of help from you.

I just got in front of the house after a 35 mile drive, pushed in the clutch and BANG!!!!! Upon investigation I found that the barcket which is welded to the clutch pedal where the cable hooks on, broke. I removed the clutch pedal, cleaned it up, matched the broke piece back up and welded it. Then I cut a corner off a small thin wall piece of square tube, in essence making a small piece of angle about 3/8" legs and about 1 1/2" long. I then welded that to the bottom side straddling the crack. Wire brush and paint and put it back on. The clutch has never felt so good. It must have been in the process of breaking even before I bought it almost two years ago. 78' 124 spider.
