Supercharger
Supercharger
Hey Guys,
Has anyone installed a supercharger in a F.I. spider? I think the turbo124.com guys have, but instead of dealing with the blokes downunder, I am wondering if someone stateside has done this. I was thinking that an Eaton M62 or M90 would be good for this. Has anyone had some knowledge with this?
From what I have been reading, supercharging works rather well with the stock Fiat engine parts with some tweeking.
Anyone with links?
Thanks
Pope

Re: Supercharger
I was looking at an Eaton unit at the SEMA show that was coming out for the Miata. It looked like it could easily be adapted. I'd like to give it a try.
Re: Supercharger
Do you know what model # the supercharger was. I was looking at a Eaton M62. The base M45 seems OK, but a little more boost is always better. Do you know if it can be built on a standard stock F.I. 2.0 engine? Any mods?
Thanks

Hi Pope,
Check out James Seabolt page - he did install a turbo to his FI several years ago - see: http://users.chartertn.net/jseabolt/80spider.htm
ciao,
Stefan

Re: Supercharger
boost level will be important to determine the feasability of using a stock 2L. The turbo cars used a thicker head gasket to lower compression a bit and they retarded timing during boost situations
Re: Supercharger
I dont want to do a turbo. The stock pistons are 8.1:1 right? Thats low compression. Also a little porting and polishing will help. I was thinking of bead blasting the stock pistons and possibly putting a ceramic coating on the piston heads to take the increased heat.
I think the Turbo guys want high end speed for racing. I want low and midrange speed off the line. This will be just for wicked street use.
Ive seen James Seabolt page and it is Turbo...not for me. Have to pick up Corky Bells Supersharging book I guess.
Thanks

Re: Supercharger
turbo or supercharger doesn't matter; you're still increasing pressure inside the cylinder.

Re: Supercharger
The Fiat Spider Voumex was a supercharged carbed model. I doubt parts would readily be available but it's an impressive car all the same. Scroll down to the 124 chapter. It's quite interesting:

Re: Supercharger
Well, don't forget that the last Pininfarina Spiders sold in Europe were supercharged with a Rootes-type blower; the Volumex Spidereuropa. There weren't many made, but Lancia also sold a Volumex Beta, and the stuff should swap. Croft sells a carb base adapter to cure the tilt difference (at least I think that's what it's for). So, short answer, this has been solved over twenty years ago. I think blower design has advanced quite a bit, but you'll still need mounts and pulleys for the belt, etc. b-
Re: Supercharger
Hey guys,
thanks for the info.
I have a fuel injected spider and am looking for some one who has done an Eaton supercharger on a fuel injected Spider. I would like to see the setup that it took to install it. Plus all the changes to the fuel injector system to handle the increase.
Does anyone have a shop manual for the volumex version?
Again thanks

Re: Supercharger
With you there. I've got the M62 in my daily driver (Saturn Ion Redline) and I absolutely love it - lots of grunt on the left side of the tach. You can't use it all in first gear.pope wrote:I dont want to do a turbo. ... I want low and midrange speed off the line. ...
The "LSJ" engine as GM refers to it, is 2.0L and 9.5:1 compression. Now you've got me wondering how the intake port centers compare on the two motors. Maybe an adapter could be milled to mount it injectors and all. You'd also gain the liquid-to-air intercooler system. One could even somewhat justify a complete transplant since the LSJ was built at the FGP (Fiat-GM Powertrain) engine facility in Kaiserslautern, Germany. I'll have to do some comparisions when I get the Fiat out of storage this spring. The blower intake at the rear of the engine is certainly a concern.

Re: Supercharger
that Saturn engine is really sharp. 205 hp!
But...I've got to do it to the fiat engine. Its just my pride ya know.I am starting to get this thing worked out in my head (layout of engine compartment) and want it to look beautiful and if it were designed from the factory or better yet, Chip Foose. I am going to have to cut, grind, and manufacture the parts. But it will be superbad. Good fortune is that I live in Detroit and have access to everything possible.
Thanks for the heads-up

Here's one:

Anyone have any experience with this group? On the nav bar at the left, click on
Leistungssteigerung and then click on DS Kompressor
Looks very interesting. For the sake of those who don't "sprechen" Deutsch, here's the translation:
"Due to our vast experience in building blower engines it was no problem building one for the 124 Spider.
We have built over 200 different blower engines, mainly for japanese off-road and selected one offs.
The blower we use is a multi application unit, that produces much increased power.
The system is mounted on a seperate bracket next to the engine and is constant belt driven from the crankshaft. A bypass control connected to the gas pedal detours excess air in normal vehicle operation.
This results in the engine running under partial load like a natural aspirated engine. However, pushing on the gas pedal closes the bypass valve and results in instant positive pressure - you now have 225 NM at 4500 rpm and 158 HP at 5380 rpm available. Noticiable is that it does not matter wether you hit the throttle at 120 km/h or from a standing start.
The only modification to the engine is a special head gasket. This is enough stability and can probably handle even more power. A watercooled intercooler, that will also be available for the turbo-spider, is in production.
The fuel injection stays unmodified. The missing fuel is pumped in with the help of a small control module. This will run the vehicle under normal operation like the manufacturer has intended and the extra fuel is only injected under load.
Wether you use the vehicle as a daily commuter or extract maximum power, your vehicle will run without problems as we are used to from G+B."
Here's a link to a forum thread at Fiat124turbo.com where the owner of an old Coupe mounted an Vortech blower. Intersting options to say the least:

Yup, I know Hansi Baumgartner in person.Joe Clemente wrote:...http://www.gb-motorentechnik.de

He is a great mechanic and knows all about the VX and increasing HP.
He just sells excellent parts - but they have their price.
I just checked his price list - you need to contact him to get a quote, no price given there. He offers two stages for the FI compressor engine: 103kw/140hp and 118kw/160hp.
ciao,
Stefan
