Replacing 28/32 with 32/36 DFEV - Need some advice
Re: Replacing 28/32 with 32/36 DFEV - Need some advice
Did you block off the EGR pipe from the exhaust manifold that runs to the head? You would get a lot of noise from that.
Re: Replacing 28/32 with 32/36 DFEV - Need some advice
I have not yet checked the valve clearance, have to read up on how to do it. I did block off the exhaust port with a frost plug and a metal cover. I don't see any leaks. There was some smoke on the exhaust but I attributed it to the oil I used to fit the manifold and downpipe together. I'll see what it's like when it burns off.
Q - how long can I idle the engine without the coolant? 10-15 minutes?

I didn't see in your posts if you removed your air injection system? Did you plug the head?
Re: Replacing 28/32 with 32/36 DFEV - Need some advice
I did remove the egr and plugged the hole.

I meant the where the reed valves were on top of your cylinder head.

on my 1800 head there is 4 hloes that come from EXH side if there not pluged on yours "if you ave them"
they will make alot of noise
they had tubes that all ran into one and into the exh manifold

Re: Replacing 28/32 with 32/36 DFEV - Need some advice
Time for an update and another question.
I've put it all back together now. The clacking seems to have subsided a bit. I'm now using 20w50 as per some suggestions on the site. To answer 124Joe's question about the air injection rail - the 1980 2L head did not use a rail system only a EGR and I did plug it. No leaks of any kind that I can see.
I am now trying to tune the carb. I set the idle mixture screw turn turns out from base and the idle speed screw so that it was just touching the throttle plate (at least as far as I could tell. Not exactly sure as I can't see the contact as the screw is hidden in a spring). I started the engine and it ran like a tractor (just as the guide said it would!). I let it run for about 4-5 minutes then I turned the idle mixture screw in (righty tighty) until it ran quite nicely then backed it out to just before it started to run rough. The problem is it is now idling at about 1400 rpm. I played with the idle speed screw but it didn't seem to make a difference.
Any ideas? As an aside it seems to be smoking a bit. Can't tell yet if it is burning oil or it is incomplete combustion from running to rich??

Re: Replacing 28/32 with 32/36 DFEV - Need some advice
the holes in the middle of the head are air injection, even though it's not a rail. The egr on a 2L was on the intake manifold and used the crossover in the front of the head. If the idle speed is 1400 with the speed screw backed out you could have one of several situations; the timing may be advanced, you may have a vacuum leak, the fast idle screw may be misadjusted or the secondary throttle screw may be misadjusted
Re: Replacing 28/32 with 32/36 DFEV - Need some advice
Well I went at it again, reset the idle mixture and idle screws back to 'factory settings'. I checked the timing and it is 11 BTDC. Once it is warm I have it idling not too bad and at about 900 rpm ( a little high perhaps).
However, once the engine cools and I start it back up it runs like a tractor again until it warms up
Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

If I set the idle high so that it starts well, won't it maintain a high idle after it is warmed up?

there should be a choke seting screw
ill look around

theres a screw pointing upward tward the choke
loosen for more choke "higher RPM"

Re: Replacing 28/32 with 32/36 DFEV - Need some advice
Woohoo - I think we have a winner Turned the screw in (right) and the rpm's picked up and it smoothed out. let it run for a minute or two then kicked off the choke. adjusted the idle speed screw and it seems to be idling nicely at 750 rpm.
Now the trick is to see if it works two days in a row.
Thank you very much.
Btw - what kind of fish is that? never seen one with molars before.
