1977 Spider with Isuzu Diesel

Post by cjm »

I recently bought a 1977 Spider that has a 4 cylinder Isuzu diesel engine. The car needs a bit of restoration, but aside from an oil pan gasket leak, seems to be mechanically sound. Question: Could this be the original engine? The previous owner thinks it is, but I'm having trouble confirming this. Thanks

That engine is only original to you. Fiats used fiat engines in their vehicles. Fiat had a 1.8L engine in there. Although it is non uncommon to find a different engine installed in there, it is kinda rare, as most owners like to stay with the original. I have seen a Ford, a corvette, and a mazda engine in Spiders. If it works and runs OK, then so be it. Now you might have to join an Isuzu forum with questions on the engine.

Sounds like you have a Fiatzu. Aren't they rare?

Sounds like a weird combination and I think it won't work as expected since isuzu parts should be used only in Isuzu as well as Fiat.

Do you have an automatic transmission? The T180 allegedly was used in the Isuzus as well as the Fiats. I'd love to see lots of pictures...sounds like a good gas mileage option for a Spider if it bolted in without heavy modifications.
