Hi, all. I've been working on my spider, trying to firm up the handling. I've got excessive wheel play. I though I'd adjust the steering box. I jacked the car up and turned the wheel from stop to stop. The right stop seemed very firm, but the left stop seemed spongy. I got under the car, and found that the right wheel hits the anti-sway bar before the stop prevents it. That led me to look around further, and I realized that the tie rods are different lengths by about 2". The left side is turned all the way in, with no threads showing on either tie rod. The right side has about an 1" of thread showing on each end. I assume this is an indicator of bad work by the alignment shop.
Should the tie rods be of equal length? The manuals say that both sides are identical, but they don't refer specifically to tie rod length.
Tierods same length on both sides?
Re: Tierods same length on both sides?
theinner rods are the same on both sides as are the outers-they'll interchange. It sounds like your steering box isn't centered. Count the turns fron end to end, half of that is the center. There should be slightly more resistance to help keep the steering centered when driving. Toe-in should be checked too
