As a rule do dark or lighter colored pieces spray over better? I am trying to match my red/burgundy interior.
I have found a replacement piece in 3 different colors: blue, tan, and brown. Would one of these color to burgundy better than the others?

Re: Coloring Vinyl
The tan will be the easiest to dye.

Re: Coloring Vinyl
I just redid my door panels with dye, in grey and black over the original tan. A couple of things I noticed with fabric dye: It is really important that you use the "Prep Spray" solvent that they recommend to pre-clean. I had to apply it 2 or 3 times to keep from getting fisheyes with the dye, and a lot of it too. It needs to be soaked. This is after scrubbing the panels with detergent first, and rinsing and drying them well. The second thing I noticed is that the dyed finish may not appear completely uniform in surface finish, but I found that by wiping it down lightly with Mineral Spirits after it was fully dried, the finish became somewhat more flat and was more uniform. Next time I go over to the storage unit I will take a few pictures and post them. I dyed the armrests in black over the original tan with good results also.

Re: Coloring Vinyl
I've successfully dyed black vinyl green to match my already green interior.
It was custom color matched by an outfit in Toronto. I specifically asked him if tan would be a better base than black. He said black vinyl dyes better than any other color.
I had low expectations but the results turned out 100% successful.

I have had excellent results using the vinyl dyes.I agree 100% that you need to use the prep, adhesion promoter for best results.I have used different brands and by far the best is the SEM dyes.I wouldnt waste time with the Rustoleum or the Duplicolor brands.Just my $.02.

Re: Coloring Vinyl
Finally got over to the storage unit today WITH the camera and am posting the door panel dyeing pictures as promised awhile ago. Panels started out Beige and Black (the top section), with Beige armrests. I Dyed the panels Charcoal Grey, replaced the Black vinyl fabric, "painted" the backside with Spar Varnish, dyed the armrests Black, replaced the Chrome strip. Polished the handles with Mothers. Renovated the exterior mirror, painted mirror Silver, and overall I am happy with it. It remains to be seen how well it will all hold up, but this is a hobby car so I have only few concerns.
