Decisions
Decisions
Tough choice to make...I want a space in our garage for a 500 Abarth.
(Yes, I'm serious about getting one - http://www.fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=17115)
Keep the 1980 spider, or keep the 1975 spider? Which would you choose, and why?
1980
Good:
Automatic (wife will drive it too). Driving condition, except for the occasional hiccup. We're the 2nd owner and have a decade of documentation. Fuel injected. A few $K of improvements on our part (brakes, soft top, etc). Recent tuneup.
Bad:
Rust in a few spots like the corners of the doors, mostly not structural. The one bad spot I've found was two weeks ago - the passenger door sill is eaten through (just the horizontal bit, not the vertical supporting members...or so it looks). Mediocre/poor repaint job. Automatic (boring!). Hardtop is slightly damaged (I've been intending to sell that anyways). Rain just pours right into the doors, so the cause of the sill problem is obvious. The car is not running right now due to electrical issues.
1975
Good:
Original factory paint is still bright, just a few scratches and one or two dents. Almost zero rust. Hardtop is in good condition. 5-speed, shifted great when driven last. Pile of big spare parts collected from Craigslist (windshield, trunk lids, etc).
Bad:
No documentation. Transmission leaks, but have spare. Coolant leak, but appears easy to resolve. Most systems need some TLC (brakes, timing belt, turn signals don't work...). Likely needs a tuneup. Need to replace the engine crossmember. Needs new soft top. All of which takes time. It's been sitting for two+ years because we've been working on the house, toddlers, and the 1980 Fiat.

Re: Decisions
Swap wheels between the cars and keep the '75.
Just my opinion.

We actually have another set of those Chromadoras, refinished. Just haven't been installed on either car.RoyBatty wrote:Swap wheels between the cars and keep the '75.

Re: Decisions
I've been thinking of saving the 1975, while my wife is thinking of the 1980...
My thoughts: We won't have much time in the next few years to work on either of them, due to the two toddlers and various house repairs. The 80 will slowly change from "currently runs" to "ran when parked". I like the condition of the 75 body and paint. When our boy (and girl, let her be a tomboy) is a little older he can help get dirty and learn mechanical skills on the 75. The 80 will need body repairs for the rust, then some occasional other fixes, but not give the same 'overall' education.
Her thoughts: The 80 runs already. It's an automatic and I'll drive it. I won't drive the 75.

Ok,
I've been married for quite some time. Bring the Abarth home for a few months. Then you have to ask who is driving the cool Abarth? Then who will drive the spider? Which car does the "non-Abarth driver prefer? Fix that one, sell the other. Problem solved.

Re: Decisions
Neither of us will regularly drive the remaining spider with any frequency in the next 5 years at least. The almost-three and almost-one year olds necessitate a mom vehicle (which she likes), and then I'll be enjoying the Abarth. I definitely see the advantage of keeping the one she would drive-she would be willing to stay active in the repair work.2ndwind wrote:Ok,

(A sailing canoe!? I didn't know anybody still used those. My great grandfather sailed in Lake Huron on one 100 years ago.)

Re: Decisions
I do not think the Abarth 500 will be available with an automatic. if that changes anything.

Re: Decisions
Correct. When it's first released, it will be 5-speed only. Something to do with stringent US regulations, from what I've read. No sign of an automatic one in the foreseeable future.AndyS wrote:I do not think the Abarth 500 will be available with an automatic. if that changes anything.
Further reason to keep the 1980 and keep her Fiat blood going.

Re: Decisions
I am a fan of the fuel injected cars, but the rust would be a deal breaker for me.Whatever you can see, there is twice as much lurking.I would keep the 75,definitely put the Cromodoras on there.

Keep them both and park the new one outside.
But if I had to choose, the auto trans Spider would be the one to go. I can totally appreciate the idea of keeping the wife involved. Would she consider learning to drive the 5 speed?
