Hmm, I can only guess that someone put that little cup underneith the trunk badge to catch any leaking water. But, wouldn't the water spill out anyways when you drive? Who knows?
Anyway, how do you get the trunk badge off? With that metal peice in the way, I can not get at it. I would hate to cut it off just to get to tha badge off.

i used a small hook and pushed just the center pin up
a little on one side then a bit on the other and up she came
unless someone siliconed it it should go easy

you can bend that cup down slightly to gain some room. I doubt it's for water, more to protect anything from protruding studs
