Back in the 1990's, California was supposed to adopt the 25 years old smog exempt program where it would roll forward every year which model year car would be exempt. Then in 2000, they changed it so that 1975 would be the cut off date forever, and it never would roll forward from there. needless to say, a 75 Spider (a 75 anything collectible) is worth more than a 76 because of that. car collector folks hope they don't change it again, because it never becomes less restrictive . you always here about some ahole congressman wanting to pass a new bill that smogs cars back into the 1950's, sign this petition, etc.

Wow..that really sucks!! In rural Ga.,where I live,we have no emission testing at all. That 81 X was a one owner that had been in Atl it whole life.I bought it from him after he moved to Dahlonega. He had it sitting on the side of one of ouir best mountain roads, with a for sale sign on it for months ,and never had a single call.Hard to believe. It wasnt in the shape that those pics show but it was pretty nice.Good luck with getting yours back on the road!
I would love to drive a X that has been punched up.There were some at the last couple FFO's that were amazing!!
Once you get going on the X ,you should check in here(if you havent already) http://xwebforums.org/
A great group and they were a invalueable resource for me,as I had no clue what to do with a X

legislation often has little to do with facts or research. the actual number of cars from the late 70's through eighties that are still being driven a lot of miles anymore is minuscule, (less than 1 % of the cars on the road) and overly enforcing smog regulations on them has no significant affect in air quality.

I believe it was passed in 2003 for 75 cars and if the car is from june of 75 on has to smogged and treated as aThen in 2000, they changed it so that 1975 would be the cut off date forever, and it never would roll forward from there. needless to say, a 75 Spider (a 75 anything collectible) is worth more than a 76 because of that.
76, I found this out the hard way with one of my Fiats a while back .

I know some Fiat and MG owners of cars that fall in the smog years getting a hold of a title and vin number plate from an older car, and, ahem, you figure it out. no way any enforcement officer is going to know, "wait, that's not a 74 Fiat 124, its a 76"
