Engine bay paint

Post by Divers »

Now that my engine and tranny are out I have to strip the undercoating off.

How good or bad of an idea is it to spray the entire engine bay with rubberized undercoating?

personaly, I think it would look good. Thought about doing it myself. It would help hide dirt and grime.

Rubberized undercoating is sensitive to solvents and fuels. I think you'll create problems for yourself over time. Maybe you should try a spray-on bed liner if you want that kind of look. Either that or you could just paint it satin black too.

Hmmmm....my problem is that there is some rust I want to take care of then repaint. Since i cannot match the car color, I will go with black. I have a gallon Eastwood rust paint that I used on the floors....maybe I will use that. I am not going to remove all the wiring, just move out of the way. That is why I thought of a spray. We will see.

I'm with you on painting it black. Very common for engine bays. That is exactly what i did with mine. Matching the original paint collor is difficult while black can be kept clean and look good it the rest of the engine is shiny.

My plan was to coat it with POR-15 for rust protection and then painted the color of the car... Since I have not had the engine out, I could only paint the firewall, so far it has been holding well.

Prior to doing my restoration, the engine bay on my car had been done black at the time of it's last respray (late 80's). I put it back to body color and in my humble opinion, the engine bay looks much better body colored.
Having the engine and tranny out, it would not be difficult or expensive to have a professional body man match the body color and spray the engine bay. Should be very reasonable cost wise, especially if you do all the prep work yourself. Biggest issue for you would be towing the car to the shop.

I think I am just going to paint the entire engine bay with Eastwood black paint and call it good. That will free up some funds for more important engine work.

Thank you all for the great input.
