how about registering it in another state, then "buy" the car and register it in cali? have a relative in another state? just an idea

Register it in another state and LEAVE it registered there? This is somewhat common in New England, where people have second homes in NH or FL or down on the Cape. As soon as they reach retirement, residency changes to NH or FL and the cars, investments, etc all move. ~5% to the MA state taxman when on a fixed/limited retirement income is too significant to allow. Plus MA marginal top income tax rate is ~12%, and Short term CG are taxed at ~12%. Now there's an incentive to invest! Actually becomes an incentive to move. MA is one of the few states with a falling population. NH has no income tax and no CG tax, they only tax interest and dividends.

yep, registering it out of state and leaving it registered there is about the only option unless you have an inside connection with DMV. But then you're asking a friend/relative to risk their job by waiving fees.
By registering out of state, you're still breaking Calif law though. State law says if the car is operated in the state for a continuous period, about 90 days I think, it has to be registered here.

all of the cities are looking for ways to impound cars since the fees are substantial. It's just another way to make up lost revenue. After 30 days they can auction the car off.

No offense to all of our CA bretheren but seems to me there is one obvious solution, Hasta La Vista CA! I have two sisters living there and every time I visit I can't for the life of me understand the appeal. Sure the weather is great in some areas as is the landscape, but to many people wanting to rule other peoples lives while contributing nothing spolied all that a long time ago. IMHO!

Well my brother in law came by today with a window for my house. He brought sister #5 and my nephew. Future spider owener. He tells me to keep the engine out of the 79 and part the rest out. He found a 78 nearby for 1700. Its registered and runs' but needs an interior. I told him I would give him the set of black carpet that I dont want ' since Alvon sold me a nice grey set.He is gonna drop the 78 off once he gets it so I can give it a once over and do any needed maintanince before my nephew drives it. Feels great getin some started off in a spider like I did when I was his age.

The electric fuel pump that I installed broke. Kragen replaced it and I rerouted the fuel line around the mechanical pump. Ran the car till it started over heating, fan didnt kick on. Need to look into that tommrow. This thing starts and idles like a fuel injected car, Im really surprised at this. I found this in the fuel line before it went to the mechanical fuel pump.



Never seen one, and I had a 79 before that i totally took apart.


Been workin on this little guy too. Its been sittin for 9 years. It now has a new motor.

That flying saucer little thing is a one way check valve that was installed on 1976 spiders that came stock with an electric rotary vane fuel pump. Odd because it has an original hose and original crimped hose clamp. It should not be needed with a mechanical fuel pump or a newer self priming pump. It's not in any parts book, diagrams, or manuals that I have, there was a discussion about it a few months ago on Mirafiroi.

You have two fuel filters before the electric fuel pump. The brass/gold cylinder screwed into the inlet side of the electric fuel pump is a filter, so there is no need for the clear plastic one at the tank.

How did you wire up the new electric pump? On with the key on? Or on with the oil pressure sensor as the ground? I sort of have a franken fiat fuel system on my 78. I have both a mechanical fuel pump and an electric. The electric fuel pump is only activated by a switch hidden under the dash. I only use the electric fuel pump to prime the car in the morning then start and drive around with the mechanical pump. The electric is there as a backup in case the mechanical should fail and also offers better starting/priming after the car has sat long periods, or after a short 10 min stop and there is heat soaking/vapor lock.

I guess since you are in Cali and its a 79 you have to keep all the emissions equipment? Looking good, keep up the good work.

The electric pump runs off the battery. Directly. I hook it up every time o start the car.the future of this car is not certain yet. Just trying to see what works and what doesn't on this car.
