Carpeting for the 84 spider
Carpeting for the 84 spider
Has anyone tried to make their own floor carpeting and do you recommend doing it?

Re: Carpeting for the 84 spider
Yep just did this last summer.
I got the corn row type indoor/outdoor carpet from the local carpet store & made patterns & cut my own.
The corn row indoor outdoor stuff is real close to the stock carpet pattern.
Cost wise the good carpet from the carpet store ran me about $100 for enough to do the interior, cover my new package shelf & to do inside my trunk. I put new jute padding in to for about $50 too.
Home depot & the such sell the stuff cheep, less than half that price if you can find the right color but they didn't have straight black so I went to the carpet store.
You can use you old pieces to pattern the new or I have made patterns on the computer that can be printed out full size.
Here's a couple pics
patterns layed out on carpet (extra area for when I do my trunk)
new pieces installed
I didn't have the old carpet to pattern from so I made up compute files at work (sign company) from pics that a fellow member here posted of the carpet patterns he made.
I cut the paper patterns out first & fitted them to the car before I cut any carpet & it worked great.
Send me an email if you want the files that can be printed out full size by any sign company w/ a large enough plotter or maybe at kinkos or something. don.raugust@yahoo.com
All & all not a hard job, you can buy the carpet sets pre-made from many of the vendors for about $250 +/-, pre-cut & have the sides sewn up.(starting at $170 on ebay, quality?),
So it's weather the additional cost of pre-made vs the labor to do it yourself is worth it,

Re: Carpeting for the 84 spider
Hi Don, I was looking to do this as well in the following weeks. Curious to know the size of the carpet piece above?

Re: Carpeting for the 84 spider
I ordered a 12' X 8' piece, enough to replace all the stock carpet, cover the large rear storage deck I built & do the inside of the trunk all with the grain of the carpet going the right direction.
You can see what I have left over, after the patterns, that is for the trunk (in the first pic).
If I remember right it is 12' wide on the roll with the grain running with the roll (8' direction), & you could get alot less if your only replacing the carpet.
Just gotta make sure its wide enough to do the longest pieces with the grain running the right direction.
I think the longest pieces, the tranny tunnel sides are right @ 60 ", so 5' might just be enough, 6' would be best.

If you want a more finished look, you can also have the edges bound at almost any carpeting store. It cost me $1 per foot for edge binding, so the total cost was about $15 for the pieces that showed and it looked fantastic. If you have your old carpet, you can use it as a template.

HI Don,
Which seats are those?
And how did you cut the carpeting?
Thanks,
Mark

Opus, the seats are from Vision Technology off evil-bay, blk/blk leather sparco style
They've got a few different styles. Heres a link to their store.

I cut the carpet with a pair of scissors, the old kind with no plastic!
The indoor/outdoor stuff isn't real thick & the giant pair of old school shears worked great

Re: Carpeting for the 84 spider
Can I buy the patterns or borrow them. The old carpets smelled and were in such bad shape that I threw them out.

Nice work. Now I'm curious. Are reproduction carpets not available? My car needs carpet badly and I had just ASSUMED that I would buy a new carpet when the time came. DIY is even better though.

I'm working on this too, and it appears that there is no commercially available carpet kit for the Pinin spiders with no back seats.SergeantSavage wrote:Nice work. Now I'm curious. Here's a link to Vicks available carpets but all the vendors have it along with various evil-bay sellers.

Those kits are for pre-83 cars, the area behind the seats and up to the rear shelf is different on the 83-85 cars.DocGraphics wrote:Here's a link to Vicks available carpets but all the vendors have it along with various evil-bay sellers.

If you cannot find somebody to do the surging or binding on the side, i found this interesting site
to do it yourself.
I will be doing it that way in about 2 weeks, when the car comes back from the paint shop
