Carpets for an '81 Spider (RHD)

Post by adrians »

Hi All,
Carpets :!: :!: :!:
Sizes and Patterns,

I've been pulling the new (old) car apart all weekend, I have decided the old carpets can't be saved.
I wanted to get a new set of carpets make by a local upholstery shop, however I don't have all the pieces which make up the entire carpeted area.
I've browsed these forums and can't find any info ?

Has anyone seen listed on the Internet the actual dimensions of the carpets pieces and a template or pattern ?

Thanks

Adrian, I'll double check when I get home, but I had saved the original carpet when I replaced it with cheapo carpet. If it's still in the storage closet, then I can trace it onto some "packing paper" that I have and fold it up and mail it to you. I have a pretty good feeling that I remember tossing it in the quest for more storage space this last fall, so you might be out of luck. Which pieces are you missing? perhaps I or someone might be able to help with a piece or two...

Update to the carpet situation,

A local upholstery shop quote $700 for a new set, so I'm buying a moulded coupe carpet ($180) and going to cut it down to size ! If it all works then it's a cheap alternative!

What color is you carpet? If it is the charcol grey loop carpet, then Home Depot has an outdoor carpet that looks almost exactly like the origional. At 41 cents per square foot you can do the whole car for under $30. They also have it in black.

Ouch, $700? Cutting out the carpet using your original as a template is quite easy and having the vinyl edging sewn on shouldn't cost much at all. Somebody send this man a template for what he's missing! Is the carpet you're missing a one piece that goes up to the pedals or half carpet/half rubber mat like mine?

You can perhaps buy 5 yards of high quality carpet as I did below, and install it with just three pieces as I did, I'll post pics tomorrow as I'm installing the car radio for my son's spider so the car floor is a mess with tools, the carpet installed easy, I just applied Dynamax sound padding across the entire floor, then applied the carpet with spray adhesive.. it's VERY luxurious, and you'll like the quality almost as good as Wilton carpets or better... plus the carpet is completely wool and forms easily.

That's nice looking carpet and resembles the original corn row. I don't know why I insisted on keeping the original 35 year old carpet in my Spider.

See the 'Custom Stuff' Red to Beige conversion for photos of the carpet installed in the spider.
