While we are on this topic, here is what I found inside my door when recently opened it up for the first time. (1980 FI Spider 2000) I am not sure if the covers over the openings were from Fiat or installed by a PO, but I can vouch for the fact that there is essentially zero rust on the doors. Original car color was obviously Bronze. There is some electrical tape and putty compound in there too, that seems to have done a pretty good job sealing out moisture. The door panel fibreboard is still in pretty good condition although a little out of shape. But I must caveat that I believe the PO (12 years they owned) did very little rainy day driving.

Stripped the door to a shell :D

broke the black thing from the inside by accident. Good thing it's a parts car

Mine had the electrical tape & the white patches, too. Guessing they were Fiat's insulation?

The white patches were there to keep water out of the door from what I can figure. The tops are inside the door and the bottoms are out.

Yeah it is actually pretty clever, in a minimalistic sort of way. These white pieces are cardboard-type materials, and although it is not fully clear in the photo, they are notched about halfway down to hold them at an outward angle, so any water entering from the top would flow into the door frame area and away from the fibreboard panel backing. I plan to cover the back of the fibreboard with either a coating (acrylic or spar varnish or something) or plastic sheetgoods, when it all goes back together.

I covered the holes with aluminum foil tape. Works great!
