1981 Restoration
Re: 1981 Restoration
I think I have just about got my list of engine upgrades that I am going to pursue. For those contemplating a similar adventure, I put the dollar figure to the right. I am sure of all the pricing except for the machine shop stuff. I need to research if the current Bosch injection system can handle this setup. If not, I may have to change some things. We shall see....its a learning experience for me. The line separating the list is the difference between what I need (top half) and what I want (the bottom few pieces). If I have missing something (especially in the need section) please chime in!

Re: 1981 Restoration
I think I paid about $60 per hole for re boring,( Love 4 cylinder engines) and about $5-600 for all the head work and valve re grinds. Balancing the whole works was about $250-300.00 (all cdn $$$)

Re: 1981 Restoration
All right....all pulleys and covers off. Pistons disconnected from crank.
1. How does the crank get removed? Seems like I need to slide the whole crank towards the pulley end and lift out....but obviously that is not going to happen.
2. Aux shaft is ready to slide out, but is not coming. Retainer under cover is removed. Gears for oil pump are removed. Mthe shaft just does not want to come out.
Eager to get this done...then cleaned so I can turn the corner and start rebuilding!

Re: 1981 Restoration
You have the oil pan off eh. Crank comes out from the bottom. Make a note the way the thrust washers are aligned, new ones go in with the groves aligned the same way.
The aux shaft should just slide out if you have that retaining bracket removed. Perhaps the #2 con-rod might be in the way a bit, turn the crank a tad then. Perhaps a LIGHT tap might get it to listen and come out.
Have fun
Chris

Re: 1981 Restoration
I am such a moron...especially when I am tired. It would help if I actually removed the rear seal cover so the crank would come straight out! I need a vacation
Re: 1981 Restoration
Narfire,
The thrust washer (1 of them fell out already)......fell out. I will try and see how the other is oriented, but I think that one has move anyway.
Should I just replace them?

Re: 1981 Restoration
Just bought a complete head gasket set off Ebay for $65.56. I have always had good luck with Fel-Pro.

Allison's (Mark) 274FI cam's and performance intake and exhaust valves. Next to find good springs and adjustable timing pulleys.....

Re: 1981 Restoration
I have those as well. Once dialed in (get the adjustable cam wheels!) at 109 deg centerline, the car pulls like no ones business. Love em I believe the degree-ing in of the engine can be done on the stand, otherwise the rad has to come out to get at the crank nut and mount the wheel.Divers wrote:Allison's (Mark) 274FI cam's

Re: 1981 Restoration
Alright...need some MORE help. I just cannot get the darn aux shaft out and do not want to beat it. Anyway see anything wrong in the picture?
Also...what is the "trick" to getting the pistons out? My jeep engines, the pistons just slipped right out the top??? These get stuck...assuming its the combustion ridge that I need to gently sand off?
Thanks!
Robert
